Samba asks for credentials no matter what

Featured Replies

I can no longer access my public shares without credentials/logging in.

I was copying over files from a different drive when I noticed that the permissions for certain folders were all wrong. I fiddled with the permissions. Then I found the new permissions section in tools.

But now I couldnt access any shares without being prompted for credentials.

I've been trying to some how reset the share setting back to default but to no avail.

I've tried adding removing shares. All set to public but no matter what I do I get prompted for login.

This is true on both windows and linux. And yes I've cleared credentials etc.

EDIT: I've tried booting in safe mode but its the same story.

I'm fighting the urge to just reinstall the whole thing

Critical question: were you able to access the data AFTER you have entered your credentials?

Asking for credentials is rarely a problem with the server, especially if you set share to public.
