July 13, 20169 yr I am currently trying to install unraid on a laptop, just to test it out and see if it's worth buying. Just to get it out of the way, yes I'm aware of the implications and inefficient nature of such an undertaking, I still want to experiment with it and click around so to speak. Herein lies the issue, my bios don't allow me to process the USB in any other way than UEFI. There is no option for legacy support on the drive. Is there any other way to install? With the ubiquity of UEFI these days, why is there not better support for this anyways? Thanks for any help and advice!
July 14, 20169 yr Author I'm guessing the lack of response indicates there is indeed no other way to install the server . Is there any plan for UEFI compatibility in the future?
July 14, 20169 yr I've never seen a BIOS that didn't allow legacy boot. You probably have to change settings in multiple places, for example, one area to disable secure boot, another to enable legacy boot, but the second area isn't even visible until the secure boot is disabled. You've not told us what model the laptop is, so we can't help with specifics. Try googling your laptop model plus secure boot or disable uefi and see if there are some directions available for your specific machine.
July 14, 20169 yr And if all else fails you can install something like plop (if it will boot from uefi flash drive) and use that to boot from non uefi unRAID flash drive. Potentially would then use 2 usb ports but would allow you to test.
July 14, 20169 yr Author Hi, thanks for the reply! The laptop is a RoG G751JT. I did some extra googling after your advice and believe I have figured it out. The legacy mode is called CSM in my bios, should work fine now! Thanks again!
