Help with Stress Testing when Adding New Drives To An Array + Swapping Out

Featured Replies

Sorry for the somewhat noobish question - i did a search and found sooooo much information it was hard to sift through and find what i need. I'm sure someone has outlined this but i just couldn't find it.

So I currently have a 4 TB parity drive and 3x2TB drives for data. I have purchased two more drives and unless someone here can tell me what to add so that i can plug in both ... i need to pull out one of my 2 TBs so that i have enough room for the new 4 TBs. But is there a way to stress test if i shut down the array, attach the new drives, and power the array back on?

I'm really unfamiliar with stress testing beyond the notion that it's apparently something i need to do.

Thanks!

You stress test a drive by doing a preclear, here is the link to the Preclear Plugin.  Actually, you are better off obtaining it via the Community Applications Plugin, which is overall a great resource.

But you mentioned needing to pull out a drive - what do you mean by that?  Are you out of bays or sata ports in your unRAID server?

Yes, you still need the script.

You can do the pre clear in another machine if you can stand up a test server using a trial license...

Cool! I got it off the community applications page ... do i still need to install the script? and re: the other part ... yeah 1 bay left and no SATA ports :(http://pcpartpicker.com/user/helpermonkey/saved/8TbKHx

Do you have an open PCIe?

yes i do ... but not sure what product to purchase ....  i was going to buy this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816115031) but it's a) out of stock and b) not sure if that's what i need.

If you want a 16 port card I would go with this one (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816118142).  I believe it will work with unRAID.  I've seen posts in the past on earlier versions of unRAID but I do NOT have one yet so I cannot confirm it with the latest Beta/RCs.

that's a kick ass card from the looks of it ... unfortunately the case that i have (Lian-Li PC-Q25B Mini ITX Tower Case) doesn't have enough space in the case for that many drives :(

How many SATA ports would you like to add?  Seems like 2 or 4 would do it...

4 ... though my case only has mount space for 1 more drive

Thought you wanted a 16 port card since the one you linked to is a 16 port card but out of stock.

i thought i linked to an 8 port! sorry about that.

I think it's fairly common to put 1 or 2 hard drives on the removable floor of the PC-Q25b.  I'd keep an eye on drive temps but I wouldn't hesitate to try it.

You'll want to check out this somewhat dated Wiki entry and spend a little time in the Storage Devices and Controllers forum.  One of the better deals on a 4 port card is an Adaptec 1430 SA, commonly available inexpensively on eBay.  If eBay doesn't work out, I believe the SYBA SI-PEX40064 is commonly used with good results.

PCIex x1, x4 and x8 cards will fit in your x16 slot.
