July 17, 20169 yr I posted about this in the general forum and received a note that this might be a better place to post ... here is my current equipment: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/helpermonkey/saved/8TbKHx i've purchased two 4TB WD Reds to add to my setup. I've run out of SATA plugs so i need to add a pcie card (from what i've been told) to this to get more ports. Also - the lan li case that i have has only 1 more slot more in the cage. do you think i'll be okay putting one of the HDDs on the floor of the box?
July 17, 20169 yr Sorry, lost track of the other thread. I think it's fairly common to put 1 or 2 hard drives on the removable floor of the PC-Q25b. I'd keep an eye on drive temps but I wouldn't hesitate to try it. You'll want to check out this somewhat dated Wiki entry and spend a little time in the Storage Devices and Controllers forum. One of the better deals on a 4 port card is an Adaptec 1430 SA, commonly available inexpensively on eBay. If eBay doesn't work out, I believe the SYBA SI-PEX40064 is commonly used with good results. PCIex x1, x4 and x8 cards will fit in your x16 slot.

You can read about it: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=40683 This is a cautionary note of a situation that you should take into account. I am using the following card and I am very happy with it: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BUC3N74/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and it has a Marvell chip on it. I chose it because the reviews were favorable and it had that large heat sink on it. It is important to realize that unRAID during parity operations will fire up all the hard drives for extended periods of time. I thought that the larger heat sink was a nice piece of insurance...
August 6, 20169 yr Frank, I think I will buy that card you recommended I was curious though are transfers just as fast through PCIe as the onboard controllers?
August 6, 20169 yr I installed the cards when I added enough Hot-swap cages to fill up my case on my Media server. (Total of nine cages but only six are used at present.) So only three of the four ports are connected and only one port is currently servicing a drive. The only thing that I noticed is that the time required for the parity check dropped by 12 minutes after the installation of this card. And the speed may depend on the variety of PCIe that your Mb supports and what other cards (if any) are on that buss. Remember, the PCIe buss is bandwidth limited so as you add more drives onto the controller, that limit may come into play. So there are a lot of variables in the entire equation. But, basically, if you need a drive (like an SSD) to be fast, keep it on the MB ports.
