10TB OH MY!!!

Featured Replies

Not Interested; It's not SSD.  8)

Pricing, as expected, is just plain silly.

Helium Filled.

7200 rpm.

PMR

7 Platters, ~ 1.43 TB per platter for data density

3 year warranty on most models, 5 year warranty on the Baracuda model.

Pricing, as expected, is just plain silly.

A bit high, but not really out lf line for a state-of-the-art unit.  $470 on Newegg = $47/TB.

A 4TB Red is $150 = $37.50/TB, so it's only $10/TB higher.  A premium price?  Yes, but hasn't been all that long since 4TB Reds were in the $200 range, so it's consistent with those.

I recently bought a few 8TB Reds for $340 ea -- $42.50/TB.  Of course these are helium sealed units, so they're more equivalent to the $610 Enterprise 10TB units from Seagate => which, at $61/TB, are indeed getting pretty high.

All three of these new drive models from Seagate are Hellium filled. Also this is announced pricing. The pricing levels will slowly drop. The pricing is substantially better than the previous model from Seagate; dropped from $61/TB to $47/TB.

My hope is these models force all drive prices to drop starting with the 8TB models.

Price drops would indeed be nice  :)

I will say that regardless of the price, I couldn't be happier with the 8TB Reds ... these are REALLY nice drives that perform exceptionally well and run very cool.

good to hear. I had planned on a pair of 4TB (parity + data) but now Im' tempted to step that up to the 8's especially after a little time for the 10's to put pressure no prices

And I just bought two more 6TB WDCs. :(

I can't wait until the prices drop to competitive levels with 4TB and 6TB drives. It's pretty amazing how much storage capacity you can stuff into a home NAS device these days. With these drives I have a 180TB max capacity on my unRAID box. That's just insane.

This will be the next HDD I buy for the server. :D

Thinking about 3 cycles of preclear makes my head hurt

Put it in wait two+ weeks  ;D .

Down to $449 for the NAS IronWolf model. Prices dropping already... ;)

Those saying preclear would take a while, the good news is it will be faster per TB than earlier drives since these are 7200rpm PMR with higher data density 1.429 TB. The older drives were typically 1.25 TB.

Anyone here on the forum that have purchased and tested an ironwolf yet in unRAID? http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/internal-hard-drives/ironwolf/

I just ordered one. I don't have an unRaid server anymore, but I still got a spare license. Will hook it up to my Laptop via USB docking station and will post preclear results.

how much did that cost you?

I ordered it on Amazon.de (had some coupons left) where it is 469€. Lowest price in Germany is around 440€ at the moment. It fell pretty fast after launch, but it seems to be stable at this price for now.

Tempted to buy. I am down to 8gb free space... But I need to get 2 of them since one needs to be the parity, urgh..

Got the drive today, running the preclearing now. Will report back when it is finished. See you in a few months :D

8gb?  When I have 8gb of free space, I consider myself to be out of free space.  :)

But you don't have to buy both at once.  Replace the parity drive then add the old parity drive as a new data drive.  Unless you're out of ports.  Then replace the smallest data drive with the old parity drive.  Unless all the drives are then same size.  Then you need two new drives.

I don't like how the Hardware ECC recovered dropped down to 9 from 100 when failureis at 0.

I've responded about its SMART report over here.
