January 11, 201016 yr My motherboard supports Unbuffered ECC, however I purchased non-ecc. My friend claims non-ecc isn't a big deal and doesn't matter for a home server. My server will be storing 30TB of blu-ray and DVD rips. Should I send this ram back and get some Unbuffered ECC ram?
January 11, 201016 yr If your motherboard supports non-ecc, then you can use it with no issue. ECC ram does not buy much for a basic or small home setup. >> Should I send this ram back and get some Unbuffered ECC ram? You do not need to unless you are really anal about 100% reliability. For an enterprise solution, I would say yes, for a basic home server setup I would say it's not necessary.
January 12, 201016 yr Author Thanks, I guess it's not worth the restocking fee and return shipping fees.
January 12, 201016 yr Just make sure you run a memtest on it. Lots of other things will fail before memory does - if it ever works.
