Cache Drive Failed - Unformatted

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I just read Rajahal's post regarding to Cache or not to Cache and was happy to read that I have gone down the right path.

A friend and myself put together my server (he was the one with all of the knowledge though), so as far as the actual set up, it was all his knowledge too.

I have a server for my house that contains media and other storage for backups, the media is accessed from different location throughout the house.

My friend that helped me with it is away on holiday and a few weeks ago I woke up and Plex in the house was working. I looked up server status and my Parity Drives (4 x 4TB) are working fine, however the 120Gb Kingston SSD cache drive is saying that it is unformatted.

The software for the plugins on my server were installed on this I believe (Plex, SABnzbd, SickBeard, etc) or the settings for these were stored here at least, so I will need to start again with those settings etc.

So I assume, that this drive has failed somehow. Does it mean that I should just replace that drive or will it work if I just format it?

Clearly I am very green with this, thanks in advance for any assistance.

Don't format it. SSD rarely ever fails so it might just be a connector problem.

Ok, So I have shut the server down and taken it apart, checked all of the plugs and connectors and everything seems to be in order.

Restarted server, connect to unRAID and it still shows that drive as unformatted.

Any ideas?

What filesystem was the drive? You will have to try to repair the filesystem.

Sorry, how do I find that out?

Pretty sure it was Linux (is that what you mean?)

Since you mention plugins, what version of unRaid are you using? (it will possibly narrow the choices down)

UnRAID Server Pro v 6.0-beta10a

Doesn't narrow it down  :(

Can you post your diagnostics?  maybe something in there to help.  (btw you really should update to 6.1.9 after this is all sorted out)

Cheers, I will definitely update it when this is done.

I have read the help section (which I should have read first), and I have rebooted since posting this :(

Also, I can't seem to find the Diagnostics under tools, is it somewhere else on my version?

Diagnostics didn't appear until 6.0 rc4 so we're out of luck there.

you could do this from the terminal

cp /var/log/syslog /boot/syslog.txt

and then post the syslog.txt file that'll be saved on the flash drive.  Maybe some clue, maybe not.

Sorry mate, not sure what you mean by terminal.

The server is just the tower, which I access via the IP address on a web browser on my normal PC.

attached keyboard / monitor, or through your PC via a program called "putty"

Actually, there's another option.  I can't remember when "auto" as a filesystem came into effect for mounting.

On the webUI go to Main, click on the cache device to bring up its settings.  There should be a section saying file system type.

Is this what you are after?

Seriously a mission for a noob, lol pretty happy I have gotten this far.

It also appears that there is some information on that Flash Drive with regards to my config and settings  for the apps that were on the Cache Drive, is this relevant or useful?
