Hi there,

I'm planning my first UNRAID build, but all this is still very new and confusing to me and I actually feel the more I read the more confused I get.

I already did a trial build on old hardware I had laying around, but now I'm trying to decide which hardware to buy.

What I basically want is a replacement for my Synology NAS, which is just serving data (sometimes not needed for days), and also doubles as an occasional torrent download station and backup for several PCs and mobile devices.

This will also be the use case for my UNRAID build (I'm thinking owncloud and couch potato dockers), but I would also like to run one Windows VM to serve media throughout the house running jriver. Also I would like to throw 3 dvd drives in there so it can function as a rip station (possibly using dbpoweramp). On top I'd like to put one or two tv cards in there so the Windows VM could also function as a TV server.

The system will be headless.

From what I read I won't need an IGP or GPU, especially since I'm looking for an IPMI mainboard, correct?

I was leaning towards a Haswell Xeon, but am unsure if this might be total overkill. Also I would prefer to buy state of the art hardware in order to be up to date as long as possible, and also power consumption wise.

So this leads me to my actual question: I understand Skylake isn't the preferred hardware when it comes to virtualization. But my understanding is I won't need any graphics passthrough, and all hardware will be passed to the same VM, so I needn't worry about splitting IOMMU groups or anything.

The 3 dvd drives might even be connected to a pcie card, which should make things even easier, correct?

I hope this all made sense and someone can shed some light for me.

Thanks,

Simon
