New SATA Controller + Drive results in pre_clear.sh hanging server

Featured Replies

I've been using unRAID for about a year now with no problems.  I've also learned a ton reading these forums.  Now I'm hoping you guys can help me out with something...

Before getting to the problem, some basic details on my system (Prior to the changes listed below):

MB: ASUS P5E-VM DO

CPU: Intel E7200

Memory: 2GB

Drives: 3 x 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F1, 1 x 1TB WD Black, 2 x 1TB WD Green

I recently made the following changes to my server:

1) Replaced the 1TB Samsung parity drive with a 2TB WD drive.  I did this about 4 days ago with no issues.

2) Installed a new SUPERMICRO AOC-SAT2-MV8 64-bit PCI-X133MHz.  This was installed the same day I swapped the parity drives, no issues were encountered.  If it matters, it's installed in a PCI slot, not a PCI-X slot (not ideal, but it's better than nothing..).

3) Installed the Samsung drive that used to be the parity drive as a new storage drive.

When I attempt to pre-clear the Samsung using the pre_clear.sh script, network connectivity to the server drops immediately (web, shares, telnet).  Only way I've found to restore it is to manually reboot the server (obviously not something I'm a fan of doing).

There are a few errors relating to the Samsung drive in the syslog.  I have reconnected all cables, no luck.  If it was a brand new drive I'd just assume it's a bad drive and send it back, but the drive has run great for the last 6 months.  Either I got very lucky and swapped out the drive just before it went bad, or there is something else going on.  If you guys could take a look at the syslog and let me know what you think I'd greatly appreciate it.  Let me know if there's any other info I can provide to help and I'll get it as soon as possible.

Thanks in advance - Ryan

It is far more likely that the sata controller card is conflicting with the networking card.  Try a different PCI slot.  Or try some of the boot codes as mentioned in the wiki.

Thanks Joe L.  Swapping PCI slots seems to have solved the problem.
