Dealing with Randomized Disk IDs

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

I have two SATA drives mounted in an "Icydock" USB-3 enclosure set to JBOD.  Every time I boot, the disk changes ID, forcing me to reset the config and add the drives back again.  /dev/disk/by-id entries are shown below.  It's the hex string after the word RANDOM that changes on boot.

My guess is the controller is adding this it but I see no way of changing it.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Cache drive, this works fine

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root  9 Aug  1 18:44 ata-SSD2SC240G1CS1754D117-820_PNY45150000927381497 -> ../../sdd

Boot USB

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root  9 Aug  1 18:44 usb-SanDisk_Ultra_Fit_4C531146590413116110-0:0 -> ../../sdc

Now the two hard drives, the bolded hex is what changes.  From what I've read it's probably the controller ID but I'm not positive.

Use disk by label instead?

Great idea, although there doesn't seem to be a obvious way how.
