Wondering if this is normal..

Featured Replies

Long time user of Unraid.. currently on release 4.4 for the past year..

I recently replaced my parity drive with a larger one.. A new Hitachi 2TB from a Seagate 1.5TB..  That went fine.. The rebuilt took 34 hours, array was brought back online.  Writes are about 10% to 15% faster with this new parity drive so I'm happy..

Then, I took the 1.5TB Seagate (formerly the parity drive) and replaced a WD 1TB drive in the array to give me more space.. Performed the procedure I did many times in the past: "checked the box", clicked on start.. and the array has been in a "starting..." state for approximately 24 hours now and still going.. and inaccessible..

Is this normal?  When I put a brand new drive vs. used in it doesn't seem to do this.. it starts for a few mins then goes right into the parity rebuild and expansion on the drive.. Because there was data on it before, did it need to do a clear or something first?  and then it is going to do the rebuild still?

I was reading that there is a new utility called "preclear?"  Is that what I should have used and is that the new official procedure now for adding drives?

TIA,

After about 32 hours, all activity seems to have just stopped.. i let it go a couple of more hours after that and it appears that the "clear" was completed but was not handed over to the parity function?  so web screen still shows "starting..." but nothing is updated.

So I restarted the server at tha point and it seemed to do a format and is doing the parity check/write right now..

pheeew crisis averted.

So I guess it was doing a clear and it just took forever.. and the system seems unable to continue after the clear was complete but a reboot fixed that.
