Trimming down...

Hello Folks...

Well it's been a bit since I have been around but I wanted to ask for some advice...

First my current system that is presently running about 12 HDDs...

Case: X-Case RM420 4u Rackmount V2- 20 x SATA / SAS HDD Cadddy, Mini SAS 6GB Backplane -Rail Kit

http://www.xcase.co.uk/X-Case-RM-420-Hotswap-4u-p/case-rm420.htm

MOBO: ASRock 970 Extreme4 Motherboard

CPU: AMD FX6300 Black Edition 6 Core (3.5/4.1GHz)

Raid Controller:

LSI SAS 9201-16i HBA

So now that I have a feel for what my needs are for the system I was hoping someone might have an idea as to how I can slim down... I would like to reuse the CPU in a mini-itx system or as small as I can get to support 12 hdds...

Does someone know of a small Mobo that can support 12 hdds(with or without the SAS card) and case that might work?

Thanks,

Mat

What size drives do you have? One suggestion could be to get larger drives and reduce the number from 12 to 8?

Are you looking to get rid of the XCASE?

Im not sure what mobo is compatible with your AMD chip but a lot of people have Supermicro or Gigabyte in their sigs so that might be a good place to start.

I agree with bally that the easiest way to slim down would be to use larger hard drives.  If that isn't an option, and you have to have a case that supports 12 drives of storage, then I don't see the benefit of trying to find a mini-itx motherboard.  Pretty much any case that is large enough to hold 12 drives, will be large enough to support at least a mATX motherboard, and probably an ATX motherboard as well.  Plus, you never know when you'll decide you need/want the extra pci-express slots in the future (ie, virtualization options, since your cpu supports it).  It is very easy to "max out" a mini-itx board.
