Big problems with an upgrade

Featured Replies

Ok first up thanks in advance to everyone who helps me with this one, the support of these forums is second to none and despite many of us being noobs when it comes to this stuff we're never made to feel like idiots and always learn a lot, so massive thanks to all!

Now down to business, I'll try and be as succinct as possible.

* I was having issues with not being able to set up docker, install plugins or shut down correctly (the server went into an infinite loop when trying to unmount disks)

* After posting about my issues with docker, the first step recommended was to upgrade to 6.1.9 (I am currently on 6.0.1)

* The general recommendation for upgrading is to go to the plugins page and hit check for updates. When I did this no updates were found and it simply said that the unraid server os was "up-to-date" (see attached screenshot)

* With that step failing I decided to go down the manual path, and hit a huge wall...

    * Initially I just copied bzimage and bzroot on to the flash drive and went for a reboot... the server doesnt seem to come back online via the web interface or by pinging its address... so i dig out an old monitor and keyboard and hook them up

    * I retry the boot process, it gets to the unraid "splash screen" where you can select to the load the OS, load in safe mode or do a memtest. I select to load the OS, it loads BZIMAGE and BZROOT by saying they are OK and thats where it stops, it just doesnt go any further, no errors, no reported problems it just stops.

    * I tried to boot in safe mode, just to check if this made a difference and no, same outcome.

    * I then take the USB, plug it back into my main PC and attempt a variety of file copies thinking maybe I need to copy over more than just the 2 files, no matter what i try, including removing my config files I get the same problem and unraid just doesnt boot.

    * I then decide to go for a clean install, format the USB, copy over files, make it bootable, copy my key but leave the config files off, just to see if i could get it to boot... unfortunately same deal and thats where I am now... this final part really doesnt make any sense to me as for all intents and purposes I have just tried to set up an entirely new version of the server.

I managed to restore the previous working version of unraid and get the server back up and online in 6.0.1 however I still have the issues that pushed me to upgrade in the first place, I also would like to try and stay on the most up to date version moving forward.

I think this one might be difficult to resolve so thanks to everyone for your time.

I haven't, however don't i need to be on version 6.1.x before upgrading to 6.2? I'm sure I read something about that, however in the links to the release it doesnt actually state it as being a requirement.

I am also very cautious with beta versions and prefer to only run stable releases.

This happened to me once on an Asrock board and it was solved by doing a cmos reset.

Hmm I will have a go at resetting the CMOS, however the fact that I can still restore back to 6.0.1 and boot correctly would suggest that the CMOS isnt the problem, unless there is some weird changes with 6.1.9

Does anyone know if its safe to go straight from 6.0.1 to the current 6.2RC? or do i need to get on to 6.1.x first?

The way I upgraded unRAID in the past (unRAID version < 6.1.x) was to copy my unRAID key file somewhere.  Then format the USB flash drive and setup the new unRAID version from scratch on the empty flash drive.  Make sure you copy your unRAID key file back to the config directory on the flash drive.  Have you tried this?

Yes Bob, that was the last thing I tried before reverting to 6.0.1

I'm happy to report back that Johnnie is a freaking legend! While it doesnt make any kind of logical sense to me doing a cmos clear actually allowed me to boot up on version 6.1.9

I tested it with a fresh USB and trial version of 6.1.9 until i could get it to boot, then upgraded my actual USB and BAM we're all good.

Thanks everyone, once again you have shown the unRAID community to be the best around ;)
