New CPU in old motherboard, or just replace it all?

Featured Replies

I'm currently running a built that hasn't change much since 2008. I'm having a little trouble with the SATA controller so I'm replacing it, and potentially the PSU as well (depending on whether the new controller fixes my problem). I'll keep new controller regardless, since my old one doesn't support drives over 2GB.

Naturally, once I had a reason to crack the box open again, I started thinking about the most efficient way to give this thing some juice. The motherboard is a IOSTAR TA785G3HD AM3 AMD 785G (old school) but it's still going strong. Am I able to just buy a newer, faster chip with more threads and throw it onto the old motherboard? Or would that be a waste of money?

I'm also wondering whether should (or even could) add a GPU to assist with transcoding. I've used the server almost strictly as a very passive file server and haven't asked much of it in the past, but I'd like to be able to use Plex to reliable serve HD home videos from UnRAID to my devices around the house. Would a new CPU be sufficient? If not, what should I add? I'm reluctant to start with a fresh motherboard just because of the cost.

GPU will not assist with transcoding (assuming you're talking about Plex).

What is your current CPU?

You can get a quad core phenom that will fit that board for cheap

I used to have that same cpu but switched to a phenom when unraid added docker support. It will do multiple streams in plex

Outstanding. Just so I'm clear, will any Phenom will fit that slot or are some of the Phenoms not AM3?

Not sure. Make sure you find an am3 one
