January 19, 201016 yr Hi I've run a 2TB drive through the preclear script (which took 47 hours start to finish! HDD is connected straight to MB by 3Gb/sec SATA - thank God I didn't opt for 20 cycles ). The preclear report didn't look good but even after reading the wiki entry I wasn't sure how to intepret it ! I thought I'd run another SMART report through unMENU .... the result of which seems a little more obvious to my simple mind ! "=== START OF READ SMART DATA SECTION === SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: FAILED! Drive failure expected in less than 24 hours. SAVE ALL DATA." Both are SMART reports are attached in case I've completely missed the point, but otherwise RMA here we come..... Preclear_SMART.txt unMENU_SMART.txt
January 19, 201016 yr Take or send that drive back to where you bought it! You only have 85 hours on that drive but you have 2015 reallocated sectors. That is way too many. If you have owned it too long to exchange it then start a RMA from the manufacturer asap. The drive is dying..

Even the "smart" report considers 2015 sectors to be too many re-allocated sectors. 5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 001 001 005 Pre-fail Always FAILING_NOW 2015 Be happy it was before you put it to use with your data. (and it is exactly why you ran the drive through its paces)
January 19, 201016 yr Author Thanks both. Be happy it was before you put it to use with your data. (and it is exactly why you ran the drive through its paces) Indeed. Thanks to your script!
February 26, 201016 yr Since neither of the Realloc SMART attributes show up in the diff report, I think this drive may have already been considered FAILED before even starting the PreClear. Joe may want to check for this at startup, and confirm whether the user really wants to try preclearing a failed drive. At 35 hours, it had probably already used up all of the spare sectors. It also reported then (at 35 hours), the last 5 ATA errors as "IDNF" (sector Not Found), which also indicates major problems with the drive.

Joe may want to check for this at startup, and confirm whether the user really wants to try preclearing a failed drive. You are probably correct in that the drive had failed before any attempt at pre-clearing it began. At 35 hours, it had probably already used up all of the spare sectors. It also reported then (at 35 hours), the last 5 ATA errors as "IDNF" (sector Not Found), which also indicates major problems with the drive. RobJ, Your point is a good one. I think the preclear_disk script's reporting section now needs an overhaul. We now know a lot more about what to look for and will hopefully be able to analyze and report on most of the major problems we might find. As you said, it is not enough to only look for "diffs" in the smart reports. In the same way, it might be useful to report on some drastic errors before the full preclear script cycle has completed. (Why waste 35 hours when the drive catastrophically fails 2 hours into the process) Joe L.
