August 21, 20169 yr I recently upgraded my backup unRAID machine from an i3-4360 to an i7-4770, so that both my machines could support virtualization. I found a guy on craigslist that sold me the i7 for a whopping $150, including 16GB DDR3-1600. Couldn't pass it up. He also included the stock Dell cpu cooler that was originally on the cpu. It had a loudish 80mm fan on it. I didn't feel like spending $60 on a cooler for a cpu that I spent barely more than twice that for. I noticed that the heatsink on the Dell cooler was larger than the 80mm fan attached to it. Turns out the circular shaped heatsink was almost exactly 92mm in diameter, so I decided to just buy a Noctua NF-A9 PWM fan and "retro-fit" it onto that heatsink. Worked out pretty well, and it's much quieter now.
