when is version 5 coming? 20 bay hardware? And a couple purchase questions.

Featured Replies

I'm interested in buying this, but the addons look like a pain to deal with and the bubbaraid thread implied version 5 would be a lot better. Also, what exactly am I buying when I buy a serial number? Do I get all the upgrades? When the flash drives dies do I have to buy another copy?

Thanks,

Chris

Most of your questions about licensing are answered in the wiki.  http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=FAQ#How_is_unRAID_licensed.3F

Also the policy if a flash drive fails. http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=FAQ#If_my_flash_drive_dies_or_is_lost.2C_will_I_lose_my_license.3F

Take a look there.  Send questions to [email protected]

The first beta of unRAID 5 was originally described as being anticipated at the end of 2009.    I expect to see it some time soon.  It will NOT be what you purchase probably for 6 months to a year.  Tom does not ship beta versions.    You will be able to download, install it, and run it as soon as it is made available, but it will not be the licensed version he supplies to you if you buy a flash drive with it, or a completed server from him.

unRAID 5.0 will allow easier integrating of add-ons.    It will primarily be of interest to developers of add-ons like myself.    There are two main focuses for it, the complete re-write of user-interface and file-system security.  The release notes for 4.5final contained a glimmer of a roadmap of what is to come.  The time-line was delayed by the need of lime-technology to move his web-site to a new host with more bandwidth. NO add-ons have been developed as of yet.

No packages for 5.0  have been developed.  No standards set for packages.  This will evolve once we see what is available to us and provide feedback.    If you are looking for advanced features, and are unable to follow some of the guides posted here on how to download and install files for added packages, then unRAID is not a good solution for your needs. One possibility might be you can find a friend who can assist.

Sounds good to me.

When the 20 drive version comes out I will probably buy one. One last question:

Can I share something over NFS and not have it shared over samba?

The software currently supports 20 drives (1 parity + 19 data) + additional 1 cache drive..    You'll have to e-mail lime-technology to learn if they will sell a rack mount version with more drive slots.  I don't remember any announcement, but then I don't keep up with his hardware offerings.  I do remember reading in one post that the 4.5.1 version of unRAID (not yet released) has upped the drive limit to 24 drives from 20.  Yes, you can share via NFS and not samba
