Anybody know? unRAID 6.2

Featured Replies

So I noticed unRAID just released RC4 and my question is, does anybody no or have an idea about when the official master of 6.2 is projected to be finished? I am currently on 6.1.9 and excitedly have been waiting since march when I purchased unraid for 6.2 to be officially released.

Also, does anyone know the terminology/abbreviations for new OS builds. Example, Beta, rc1, rc 2, rc3, master? What order and how many steps are there?

As always, it'll be ready when it's ready.

Software development steps (or at least how i call it):

1. After architecture planning etc and first very basic functionality is being made the first builds are pre-alpha.

2. When most of the functionality is done or at least the basic foundation is made for all wanted functionality it goes into alpha phase.

3. Beta phase; practically all wanted functions are present but stability is unsure or known to be wonky. At this point some devs choose to release to public to get an overview of what needs to be done still to make it release-worthy.

4. Releasing RC's or release candidates, functionality is at 100% and software is often made public at this point. If no terrible problems arise the candidate could be actually released with only minor adjustments.

5. RTM or release to manufacturing at this point the software is considered done or at least good enough for release to the general public.

Some dev teams would skip releasing RC's after beta, depending on how they label stuff, how critical they are about their own work and how critical it is that a released version is as flawless as possible. Software like unraid will power machines that have to run reliably 24/7 so they make the actual released for public versions pretty rock-solid. Releasing something like fallout 3 is a whole different story where few shits are given about stability upon release and the team is under pressure by the investors to release what they have so they can start filling the financial pit they made during production.

I think Tom mentioned on the RC4 thread that there will be an RC5, but barring anything unforseen the general release of 6.2 should follow.

Past experience with Limetech shows that predicting when a release will happen is virtually impossible.  In the past some releases have taken several years to get out. With the 6.x series the timescales seem to be faster but are still highly variable.  The phrase that is always quoted is 'when it is ready'.
