September 5, 20169 yr I just got my unRAID server setup completely this weekend, using it as my Plex server. It has 3x 4TB HDDs one of them for parity, and I have a 128GB SSD for cache all running xfs file system. Everything is working great, now just kinda looking into the settings/plugins/reading forums and I have 3 questions. 1) How often should I schedule a parity check? 2) Do I need to schedule a SSD trim task and if so how often for it? 3) Anything else I should install/setup for maintenance? I have read about and installed most of the popular plugins such as the problem checker and it finds no issues so everything appears to be setup correctly, just wanna make sure I'm not missing something that can help prevent any catastrophes? Thanks in advance!
September 5, 20169 yr I can only comment on what I do personally. 1. I schedule monthly parity checks. 2. I schedule a daily SSD Trim 3. I also have the Community Applications backup tool backing up my AppData share on a monthly basis. I backup my VM vDisks manually. PowerDown plugin installed to enable clean shutdowns and better logs.
September 5, 20169 yr Welcome to unRAID! NeoDude, very nice advice! I can only add a note about security, being prepared for malware. The 2 most important factors in a defense from ransomware are access control and backups. What they can't access, they can't hurt. So check all share settings, and limit them to read only as much as possible. Then limit write access to secure users for as short a time as possible. Then make sure you have backups elsewhere, and make them as inaccessible as you can. A third factor would be to stay updated, so you have the latest security fixes.
