September 8, 20169 yr I currently have 2 ssd's in my cache pool and I have my dockers and vm's using cache only. I run a couple dockers 24/7 but I do not run the vm's all the time. Would I have any issues with my dockers or vm's using spin down on the cache drives or are there any other reasons why i shouldn't spin them down. The main purpose of me wanting to spin them down is because I don't want to put unnecessary operating hours on the drives if I don't need to. That just doesn't make sense and doesn't seem to take advantage of the useful spin down feature. Would I have any issues with setting a spin down delay for my cache drives? (I imagine that my 2 samsung 850 evo's would spin up near immediately when I want to start a vm or transfer files to unraid or whatever?)
September 8, 20169 yr SSDs aren't mechanical so they don't actually "spin down". I believe they do have a sleep or low power state, but they already consume minimal power. I'm not a expert here but I can't see any advantage to trying to spin down your SSD cache drives.
