Before i buy...

Building a new PC when my parts come in this week. I am going to be using the majority of this "old" one for my first unRAID (first NAS). I  think i'm going to be OK but i thought i'd ask anyways.. Does this look OK?

The PSU is slightly different (ANTEC NeoPower 550.. its actually made by Seasonic IIRC) but those are my old, and new parts i need to order.

Should i buy a new PSU? Its a pretty solid unit. It's about 9 years old now. Been running 24/7 without a hitch for that long. Used it for 3 builds. Replaced the fan twice. hehe

Why blue drives? Cost? I'd look into more NAS orientated drives for their reliability increases and warranty.

To help with costs you could get fewer larger drives (8TB?)

Cheapest 6tb drives i can find. I've run multiple greens/blacks for 7+ years 24/7 (without spin down) until retiring them by choice (all my drives will probably die now and in the future now that ive said that lol). The new blues look like the old greens. This NAS will spend most of its time spun down. Unless i decide to run torrents on it.. then it will still have a very low work load.

The PSU in that newegg link has 3 +12V rails. That means much of its power will not be available for disks. The usual recommendation for unRAID is to use a PSU with a single +12V rail.

Ive run it with up to 6 drives in it for years without any problems. I might buy a new PSU anyways.

IIRC you can choose the rails you are using when using the modular cables. I spread it out.

That power supply will probably work out, but you'll have to be careful balancing drives across the 12v leads since it has 3 18a 12v rails.  A single 12v rail is preferred, but even though that old PSU is no longer as efficient as it was it might work for a while longer.

I like the WD Red drives and think the extra year of warranty is worth the extra $20 they'd cost you.

Overall your build looks good to me!

Yea, IIRC you can choose the rails you are using when using the modular cables. I spread it out in my other builds (IIRC heh).

Thanks.. I might buy reds and a new PSU anyways :D
