Data gone on all disk after upgrade

Featured Replies

I really hope you guys and gals can give me some help figuring out what happened. First time in 5 years i have posted. i have been able to figure problems out from reading post but not this time.

I upgraded from 6.1.9 to 6.2.0 rc5 through the plugin. User shares have been disabled and all i have enabled now are disk shares enabled so it is less confusing. Before rebooting i turned off auto start then proceeded to reboot. When i started my array all data on all disk where gone. Disk all show up and are green. i also tried to downgrade manually back to 6.1.9 with same results.

Example Disk 1 showed 4TB Free out of 4TB but this is how all disk on server look. They are all empty. To be honest i am freaking out a little bit but before i cry or my wife kills me i am hoping someone here can help.

The file system is XFS. I have tried running the command through putty in Maintenance Mode "Xfs_repair -nv /dev/sdb" and that did not help. Right now i have all disk pulled from array including parity expect 1. Hoping i can figure out where all my data went. I am hoping to see if i can recover 1 disk before i continue with other disk.

Can somebody please help and explain to me what i can do? i have tried to read WIKI and do some of test but am not really an expert and need advice before i proceed any further. My Unraid box has ran fine for 5 years and this is first time i have ever had an issue this bad.

I have attached the diagnostic file after upgrade. Unfortunately i do not have the diagnostic zip before i upgraded like a fool i stored on the server.

Thank You

I would say it was unlikely your data was gone, but your description sounds as if a lot of detail is missing about your actions so I don't know.

You really should have posted before you did anything like changing your drive assignments.

Post a screenshot of Main showing all assigned disks.

Do you have backups?

An unRAID upgrade won't touch your data, it is not gone merely not visible :)

Can you enable both disk shares and user shares, and see if that makes more things visible?

Example Disk 1 showed 4TB Free out of 4TB but this is how all disk on server look. They are all empty.

If correct this is troubling, but yeah we need more details and screenshots, were all disks already xfs on v6.1?

i have attached files below.

It has been xfs file system for at least a year with no issues.

All disk and locations are the same and have been for at least a year. Attached excel file shows what drives and what shares were assigned to them.

Disk shares and user shares are both enabled. i do not have the cache mounted or parity right now.

i didn't change anything before upgrade or after until i realized everything appeared to be gone. When i saw there was no data that is when i disabled all disk until i fully understand what is going on. After it automatically updated this is what i see. I am at a loss what is going on.

If you look at spreadsheet i made a long before this to keep track of things the TV user share is on Disk 2, 3 ,4 ,7 and 8. Now it shows disk 4 and disk 7 it shows those disk to have data on them?

Really appreciate all the help.

That doesn't look good at all...

I have no clue what might have happened, but can't see how updating unRAID would delete data, without the log can't say anymore.

You may want to search for data recovery tools that support xfs, search the forum, I remember some being mentioned.

Can you provide more data, there's not enough to make any conclusions at all from the above.  Your diagnostics in the first post shows a boot up without any issues, and once started there's an Unbalance command run (could be an automatic, scripted), then 3 minutes later you stopped the array and grabbed the diagnostics, but the array is stopped so we can't see any size info.

* First, is this the first time you booted 6.2?

* Do you have a backup of your boot disk before the upgrade from 6.1.9 (and have you tried restoring it)?

* When you first booted a 6.2 version (or any recent version), is it possible there were a number of "Unmountable" disks present?  If so, there may have been a "Format unmountable disks?" prompt there, which you may not have noticed.

* We really need a diagnostics with the array started.  And it would be good to have a diagnostics (any diagnostics) you might have before this issue happened, any version.

* Is the data on Disks 4, 7, and 8 correct and intact?  Or was there more before?  Or is what is there now just added, to an empty disk?  Please avoid writing to any drives on the array for now!  You might be overwriting the original data.

* Completely unrelated, your BIOS has some small issues, when you have time check for a motherboard BIOS update.

* When you first booted a 6.2 version (or any recent version), is it possible there were a number of "Unmountable" disks present?  If so, there may have been a "Format unmountable disks?" prompt there, which you may not have noticed.

This seems like a possible explanation. And if that is what happened, then he already had filesystem corruption anyway.

* Is the data on Disks 4, 7, and 8 correct and intact?  Or was there more before?  Or is what is there now just added, to an empty disk?  Please avoid writing to any drives on the array for now!  You might be overwriting the original data.

Maybe these 3 are OK and we just need to try to recover the others from a format.

Sorry guys been a long day.

I will gather all information you guys asked about and get back with you tomorrow. I have most of the info you guys want.

Data disk 4, 7 and 8 are not complete but do have some files on there but from only the disk share shows them if that makes any sense.

After the upgrade I did not format anything and was not even an option i saw.

I have disk 7 and disk 8 running through some xfs recovery software read only right now to hopefully see if the data is still there. Each disk is running a different software recovery to see if results are different and see if data may still be there as a last resort.

I stopped Unraid as soon as i saw there was an issue and have not touched it since except pulling the parity disk and cache to start to get that diagnostic. Way to nervous as it is about going any further until you guys have all info you need. You have more knowledge then i do and what possibly went wrong.

I will send you guys a diagnostic and the rest of the information you asked for. i have a diagnostic from the 27th but not home to send.

Thanks Again

Hey Guys,

Here is what i have noticed recovering my data. it seems like it is all there possibly? The problem is i used Unbalance to move all folders to different drives and used the include disk over the last 2 to 3 weeks maybe....i am finding doing the recovery that disk are showing the data that was on there before using unbalance. By that i mean they are the original shares using highwater and split any directory as required.

The only share that was not moved with unbalance was the tv share and thats the one that shows some data in unraid?

any opinion on what you think might be going on?

Here is old diagnostic before the upgrade.
