September 16, 20169 yr Is there an easier way to identify individual hdds? I have one that's dead but I'm not sure the most efficient way to remove it. Unmount, shut down, pull drive, boot, see if it's gone seems to be the only way I can think to do it.

September 16, 20169 yr good call. may be worth writing the designation on the drive itself too (ex: sda) No. Do NOT rely on the /dev/sd? for drive identification, as it can and does change depending on the timing of the disks being identified on boot. Serial number (last 4 is typically sufficient) is the only way you should be tracking drives for unraid.
September 16, 20169 yr Community Expert Serial number It can also be worth installing the Server Layout plugin. That way you can start recording information for disks against physical layout within the server as well. Once you have confirmed the correct physical position for every disk then the plugin helps with maintaining the other information about the disks.
