    <emulator>/usr/local/sbin/qemu</emulator>
    <disk type='file' device='disk'>
      <driver name='qemu' type='raw' cache='writeback'/>
      <source file='/mnt/user/domains/MacOS Mojave/clover.qcow2'/>
      <target dev='hdc' bus='sata'/>
      <boot order='1'/>
      <address type='drive' controller='0' bus='0' target='0' unit='2'/>

The problem is is that the disk image clover.qcow2m is well a qcow2 image :) MacOS VM will boot a qcow2 image fine.

But it seems like you forgot to set the disk type as qcow2 for this one and it is expecting a raw image.

Easiest way to change it (as you cant change it in the template now) is just to change the xml from this.

<driver name='qemu' type='raw cache='writeback'/>

to this

 <driver name='qemu' type='qcow2' cache='writeback'/>

Then it will boot fine and not hit the efi shell

I am using latest clover.qcow2 download from SIO's link, any ideas?

I'm trying to setup a High Sierra VM on my 6.6.3 Unraid Server. I've followed the video multiple times to verify i'm doing everything. However, after Force Stopping my VM (after updating the BIOS resolution) and trying to first boot into the OSX installer things start to go wrong. I'm initially presented with an Apple logo for ~5 seconds (no progress bar). After this, the VM appears to reboot back into Clover. This will then repeat a number of times until finally Clover gives up and i'm displayed with a large X.

Does anyone have any useful tips to get additional information from Clover as to what is failing?

Thanks in advance

I'm on unraid 6.6.3. I'm working with High Sierra. Everything works fine for me untill I try to pass through the gpu. At this point when I start the VM the animated reload button takes maybe 30 seconds to finish before it goes green, inplying it is running, but it never appears to boot up fully. I can't ping it and it never pops up on Slashtop.

This is the second time I started over from scratch with the same result. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Force stop the VM and then hit exit again when at the prompt but this time load the clover volume in the boot options.

edit: actually you need to change the type='raw' to 'qcow2'

Thank you for this. It's weird because in SpaceInvaderOne's video, the template allows the changing of Raw –> Qcow2 but when I went to make this change, it wasn't an option. I believe you have to change Raw > Qcow2 before you select/specify the location of the clover boot loader. Because I didn't do this beforehand, the drop-down disappeared which then means you need to edit the XML file directly.

@RSQtechThank you for posting, I had the same issue as well. I was able to get Clover to boot after making the change directly in the XML template.

@everyone: For what it's worth make sure that when you are creating the DMG/IMG in Disk Utility, that you give yourself enough room i.e., 8GB as specified in SIO's video. I tried 5.56GB (I was trying to save space) which is about the size of the High Sierra installer in the Application folder and Clover wouldn't post the installation img so I could boot. Going back and re-creating the installation img file as specified, solved this problem of being stuck at the Clover boot loader.

Maybe ask on a Kubuntu forum? Or spend 60ish bucks and follow proven methods with using unRaid?

It is important to use the correct number of cores when creating a macOS VM. In the video from @SpaceInvaderOne, his guide works with 4 cores all the way up to 8 cores. I just tried 10/12/14 cores and that's where, I ran into problems.

While I am new to Clover, I am curious to see if an updated Clover and a change to a profile like, iMac Pro, will allow me to assign more processors to the VM. Also, I noticed that we are using the Penryn designator in the XML, is this hindering us from assigning more cores/CPUs to the VM? The Mac Pro goes up to 8 cores. iMac Pro goes up to 18 cores.

Pro Tip: remove the topology and you can go up to 64 cores, or down to 3 cores, or anywhere in-between. Your Mac vm will actually be faster because when you declare a topology, osx won't push all the threads to 100%, meaning you lose performance. Without topology, it has no idea what is what and uses all threads/cores to 100%.

Is this covered in SPO's video on how to tweak macOS VM performance? Because I haven't watched it yet. LoL.

@1812 Would you mind sharing your current settings? Or recommended settings?

I'm setting up FCP X in my High Sierra VM and am trying to take full advantage of my Threadripper 1950x and Nvidia GPU; I'm also contemplating installing my photo editing software in the macOS VM instead of a Windows 10 VM.

I haven't seen his new video, just the old one. But I don't think he covers removing topology. My testing and results are here:

I've used an emulator pin in the past, but I was having issues with stability in the vm and not enough cores on my current system to use with my main desktop (and another remote vm that is used for dialing in,) so I removed the emulator pin and reassigned that core to the other vm. You gain about 5% bump using an emulator pin in an osx vm. It is advisable but I only have 12 cores on this machine, so I'd rather run 8 on the main vm, 3 on the remote, and reserve 1 for unraid and qemu functions.

when you run with no topology, it reports it as

2026461132_ScreenShot2018-11-07at6_53_29PM.png.c811d7a13724e8c2b671f26eefd8252f.png

but osx doesn't seem to care about not knowing what it is exactly. This is true for Mojave too.

I currently use fcpx doing some 4k editing and adobe photo editing products  on my osx vm on high Sierra using a gtx 1060 6GB. In testing, I found that between it and a windows 10vm, the cpu portion of benchmarking was near identical. Windows 10 still uses the gpu better than osx though, but I've recently been getting about 56-58fps in cinebench and around the same in unigene valley on ultimate. But this was only recently, as @SpaceInvaderOne and I have recently been conversing about low Nvidia gpu performances (as in 1/5th the fps of what I'm currently at.)

I can't advise about how to best setup on thread ripper and all it's shared memory and whatnot. You'll have to read around and in the end, probably do trial and error.

I also run 3 osx vm's on another 12 core machine all with their own GPUs, all with a similar setup, and all running well. I'm squeezing as much as I can out of it and it is 99.9% stable (which is better than any windows 10 bare metal install I've ever had.)

I have the same issue. Converted Mojave dmg to img using dmg2img and can get through all the steps in SpaceIndavers video but do not see a OS X boot option after changing resolution and force stopping/starting. Made sure to use qcow and not raw and changed virtio network to apple compatibility one.

I have been there too! If it doesn't show you in Clover the option to boot OSX, it means the img you have is not valid somehow and you will need to get a new img!

Yup, that was the case for me.

My next hurdle is that I cannot get my resolution to change from 1024x768 after doing a GPU passthrough. I'm stuck at that resolution even though my config.plist file for clover shows 1920x1080.

I am suspecting its because my mobo BIOS has onboard graphics. Even though it's set to onboard in BIOS, its still stuck at that low resolution in Mojave Display settings and in VNC/unraid.
