Can't boot from new flash drive

Featured Replies

I just bought a new flash drive to replace my old one and to upgrade to 6.2.

It's a Lexar 32GB drive. I can boot fine from it on my laptop, but not on my unraid server :(

I also tried a 16GB drive and get the same thing.

My motherboard is a Supermicro X7SBE. Is there some size limitation? My old 8GB stick works just fine..

Any ideas?

First thing.  Try a USB2 port rather than a USB3.

Second thing.  Boot up to BIOS (with the Flash Drive installed)  and double check the boot order options.  I have one MB where I have to do this every time whenever I add or change any drive on the the system.

EDIT:      Third thing.  If the first two did not help, post up a screen shot or a picture of the monitor when the boot process hangs up.  (Please try to get one that is in focus so it can be read!)

1. There are no USB3 ports. I did try another USB port though.. no go.

2. Boot order is fine. And it does boot just fine with the 8GB drive.

3. Nothing to show, just a blinking cursor..

Once I get back home, I will try a new 8GB stick..

How are you preparing the drive for unRAID?

How are you preparing the drive for unRAID?

I run the batch file as admin thats on the drive.. and like I said, it boots into unraid just fine on my laptop..

Did you try manually selecting the drive in the boot time menu? Most motherboards have a single use boot menu key like F10 or F11 or something, that overrides the saved configuration.

Also, make sure you save the boot order with the new key inserted, if it boots fine with the old stick, the old stick is probably still saved as the default boot device and the new stick didn't get saved as the current boot device.

I almost hate to suggest this...  You should probably check that you have the latest BIOS for this older MB.  The fact that the flash will boot on a laptop seems to indicate that there is something about that Flash Drive that your server MB doesn't like.  A BIOS upgrade may address this issue...

I am running the latest available BIOS for this motherboard.

Once I am back home I will look into the boot options again. Another wierd thing is the OLD flash drive.. I tried to read it on my Win10 laptop and it comes up with a drive letter but is not readable.. But works perfectly fine on the server..

I'll try to read it later on another box as well..

Cheers!

Is your flash drive a USB 3.0 flash drive?  I would suggest you use a 2.0 with that older MB.  I never tried a 3.0 USB flash drive when I was using my X7SBEs I only used 2.0 but I did connect a 16GB drive connected to it.

It's a USB2 drive and I did manage to get it working now.

I upgraded my server with new ram and a new cpu and since then stuff has been going wierd.

looks like that motherboard doesnt like that Xeon processor, I put my old Core 2 Duo back in and and everything is working just fine..

Can't say I ever tried a Xeon processor.  I had Q6600, Q6700, Q9550 and Q9550s.  I do have one that has ECC memory however.
