September 23, 20169 yr I have my desktop mac sitting next to my unraid server, both connected to a gigabit switch. I am transferring 40GB from my mac to the server directly to disk and not the cache and it says it will take 8 hours. On my mac, under activity monitor, it appears the current transfer rate is 1.89MB/S. (this seems slow to me?) My drive in the mac is a WD Black, and the unraid drives are WD Reds. Network card on my mac reads 1 Gbit/s and the unraid server says Network: eth0: 1000Mb/s - Full Duplex. All network cables are cat 6 from monoprice and I have tried swapping new ones in and it speed is the same. This doesn't "seem" like it is very fast, input is appreciated. I have no idea where to start. Thank you.
September 23, 20169 yr Not a Mac person, but I hear complaints about Mac speed using some of the protocols. I could be wrong, but I think they said AFP was very slow, Samba not much better, NFS might be better. A Mac person would give you better advice. More generally, your diagnostics might show a problem with your server. Need help? Read me first!
September 23, 20169 yr What version of unRaid are you using? I had this problem when I was on unRAID 6.2rc5, I was having no issues when I was on RC3, only RC5. I went back to RC3 and the issues were gone, I then upgraded to RC5 then 6.2 final release and I have been fine since then.
September 23, 20169 yr Author version 6.1.9. I am in the middle of the transfer and just letting it do its thing, so I can't update, but I will try this as soon as the transfer is done and then try transferring another file. Thank you for the idea. Do you know how to check the current transfer speed?
September 23, 20169 yr Author I installed glances and it has the Rx/s at 11MB which I don't think is right. 20 gigs left and an estimated time of 4 hours - per my mac.
September 24, 20169 yr Where is the current transfer speed reported in unraid? OS's don't do transfers and they don't report transfer speed. It's the tools that do that, so you would check the tool you are using to do the transfer. If it doesn't report it, then try another tool that does.
September 24, 20169 yr Author The update to 6.2 significantly increased the speed. my 40gig folder on 6.1.9 was an estimated 8 hour transfer, and with version 6.2 it is estimated at 44 minutes. Thank you.
