How to fix slow transfer speeds?

Featured Replies

My 'disk2' has been throwing up lots of errors, so I've been trying to move the files so I can do an extended pre-clear to test.  The problem I've been having for the last 3/4 days is it's taking forever to move the files off it, but also to new drives.

At the moment I'm getting file transfer speeds of around 2MB/s between all drives, which can't be right.  I've tried:

- using MC to move files between mnt/disk2/folder to mnt/disk5/folder, but nothing seems to happen

- Dolphin to do the same - sometimes I get confirmation messages, other times nothing happens

- using windows explorer in a VM to copy files to a new share where disk2 is excluded, and then back to the old share where disk 2 is again excluded.  This is where I'm getting the latest 2MB/s number - for files going new share-->old share i.e. isn't going via disk 2, so any issues with the drive can't be in play

How do I fix?  I've tried changing settings in tips&tweaks and for a while I thought I had it cracked, but then the speeds dropped again.

I have no parity drive as this was RMAd last week when I ran preclear when putting my 10 day old server together.

Help please!

I've been having so many problems during my 30 day trial that I've been trying to fix, that I think it might be easier to start again and try and fix one issue at a time (poor disk transfer speeds, can't add/delete files to SMB shares from windows at times, VMs sluggish at times).

If I want to start again with a fresh installation, will I be able to access the files on existing drives via the unassigned drives plugin and then move the files to the new array and add each drive to the new array one-by-one as they are emptied?

I seem to have things working, but I'm not convinced and I'm leaving unRAID running with no dockers or VMs for a while to see if it's balancing in the background.

I tried one more way to transfer that worked instantly, which can't be right unless the previous transfers had worked and unRAID was reporting file locations incorrectly:

- created a new share 'Plex'

- went into Dolphin and copied all Media files from mnt/disk2/Media and mnt/user/Media to mnt/user/Plex

all files and folders went instantly, including the 1TB (reported in the webUI) that was stuck on disk2.  When I say instantly I mean instantly, without any progress windows etc just do you want to overwrite warnings.  There's no way 1TB was copied in 1 sec, which is what is making me suspicious and I'm leaving disk2 in place for a while to see if it's copying files in the background.
