SOLVED: GB speed file transfers from server caused server network outage

Featured Replies

Hi,

I just wanted to post this in case it may help someone else in the future.

My build consists of 10 drives in 2 x 5in3 cages. The motherboard is an Asus P5PE-VM, 1GB RAM.

A while ago the onboard NIC died on this mobo as they were commonly doing (you can find more info back in the forums) and so I popped in an old server 3COM NIC (3C996-T) I had lying around at work. Ever since then I have been having a strange problem with the server dropping off the network.

I could copy large files to the server without any problem, and I can stream files off the server also without any problem. However, as soon as I try to transfer files at a high speed (copying to my workstation from the server) the server would stop communicating on the network. The only way to get it back on the network again was to issue a interface restart (not sure on the terminology here) and then restart Samba.

cd /etc/rc.d
rc.inet1 restart
rc.samba restart

Once restarted the server would then be available on the network again (either through web interface or shares) until I tried high speed copying again.

These were the overall symptoms

  • It only happened at GB connection speeds.
  • This problem would not happen if I used my HTPC which only has a 10/100 connection. If I limited my main workstation to 100 only things were fine.
  • It would happen on any file(s), from any drive(s)

Finally today I was at the local computer store buying yet more HDs to feed my beast and I decided to try a new NIC. I picked up an Intel Pro/1000 GT card.

After replacing the NIC and rebooting, I have been able to copy over 4GB to my local workstation, so I'm pretty confident that the problem is gone.

Now... time for some golf (on tv of course, it's freakin' freezin here in Ontario).
