Manual parity check on brand new array?

Featured Replies

It's hard to know what is outdated or not when looking at guides.. the one i am reading says..

After the initial parity calculation is complete, it is highly recommended to perform a manual parity check. This is to test you can read the parity data just written to the parity disk.

Is that not what it is doing on it's own right now?

I've already spent 3 days pre clearing and now almost a day doing this.. hehe

If i should still do it .. how long does it take? I've set it to do it once a month in scheduler.

Thanks :)

You're doing a parity sync (build), it's recommended (but not mandatory) to do a parity check after.

Alright :( hehe

It will take about 12.5 to 13 hours.  I, personally, would do it.  If you do a non-correcting parity check, it serves to verify that your don't have any problems with your array or its data.  (The check should not find any errors.  If it does, you have a BIG problem!!!) )  It only takes some time and a bit of extra power to provide some peace of mind.  In a day or two, I would start it some night before retiring and allow it run overnight.  It should be finished before ten o'clock in the morning.

You can still do the 'cool' stuff.  8)  And, more than likely, the check will show that everything is OK when you decide to run it.  Just realize that is always a possibility that you could lose data if something is wrong.  So don't put ten years of family photos on the server and then delete the source!  ::)  But that is good advice in any case.  ALWAYS have a backup of any irreplaceable data.

I can add shares, add data and generally play/futz around while it does it? Doh.. i guess that would make sense since you can set it to do it automatically.. otherwise you would have to remember when every time heh.

Just be aware that if you do a lot of read/write of array data during a parity sync/check it will impact the performance of both the parity sync/check and the read/write.

Alright, thanks. :P
