February 2, 201016 yr I have a 3 disk system: Parity Drive: 1.5TB Seagate Data Drive 1: 1.5TB Seagate Data Drive 2: 500GB Samsung I've been noticing a lot of clicking over the past week and when this happens, by transfers stop. I've noticed this only when I write (was writing to Drive 1). So, I powered down the drives and read from drive 1. It's quiet during reads and all seems good for now. Once I spin up the parity drive though, it starts to click and make a weird noise every minute or so. And the HDD activity light turns on even though there is no reading/writing taking place. I'm worried about the Seagate drives from what I read, so I plan on replacing the Parity Drive with a WD 1.5TB Green (not too concerned about write speed). I'll probably eventually replace the other Seagate drive as well one day. Anyway, what's the best way to go about doing this? Do I just power down the server, replace the disc, startup the server and then reassign the new drive as the parity drive? When I do that, I assume it'll format and write parity info. Any gotchyas that I should be concerned about? I'll be backing up critical data before I do so. Thanks. I know this will be a quick answer for many of you and I thank you.
February 2, 201016 yr You summarized well. You've got the basic idea of what needs to be done. For any other analysis of what is happening, post a syslog. (Instructions under troubleshooting in the wiki)
February 2, 201016 yr Author Thanks, Joe. Maybe I'll post something. I don't recall seeing anything bad in it, but it never hurts to have another set of eyes.
February 2, 201016 yr Author Joe, Any idea on how long it might take to write the parity to the new drive? I have about 900GB of data on the 1st Drive and about 10GB of data on the 2nd drive, which I think I might just manually move from disk to disk. Nothing wrong with doing that, right?
