Looking to upgrade my server

Featured Replies

Been running unRaid for many years and have gone through a few hand me down/re-used setups. I'd like to plan and purchase an upgrade this time.

Current setup is...

Processor: Intel® Core™ i7 CPU X 980 @ 3.33GHz

Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC. - SABERTOOTH X58

Memory: 8 GB (because mobo is picky with ram and I can't be bothered to figure out more for it)

Cards: 2 pci-e HBA cards

Drives: 12 data drives, 2 parity drives, 2 SSD cache drives

VMs: librenms plus I'd like to run another vm or two.

Dockers: Emby, sabnzb, znc, rutorrent, deluge, openvpn, and a couple others

What I want is an IMPI/KVM capable board, 64GB of ram (min), enough ports for my existing drives plus a few more for expansion with the mobo ports and HBA cards (1 or 2, whatever is needed).

I'd prefer it to use less power, currently the mobo/cpu is a bit of a pig, UPS Summary in unRaid usually shows a min of 260W.

Also I'm in Canada, so I'd like to source the parts from retailers (online) here, instead of buying out of the USA and dealing with exchange (but eBay has served me well before).

So, what are the suggestions? I've seen some interesting Xeon-D boards but also there are a plethora of supermicro 1151 boards and it's a bit overwhelming. I don't have an exact budget, but was thinking around $1k CAD. I do have a case currently but I might like to upgrade that also to something with hot swap (outside of budget). Please help me with this build and suggestions. Thanks!
