October 6, 20169 yr Are there any 5x3 cages without a backplane? I read that backplanes increase risk of a failure and I actually only need them to accommodate all the drives but not for any hot swapping. So since my cage can accommodate 15 drives in three 5x3 cages with a backplane, it should be able to accommodate the same number of drives without backplanes, right? Any suggestions? The real point of hotswap bays is that once you cable them, you never need to touch the cabling again when adding / changing a drive (and eventually you're going to have to do that) Sata Cables by nature are terrible, and the slightest touch can sometimes break the connection. Many, many, many posts about "reseat your cables", or when changing one drive another dropped offline...
October 6, 20169 yr Author Interesting point. I'm not planning to do a lot of tinkering once everything is up and running, but my initial plan actually was to start with a small number of drives and then add more drives whenever needed. That would, however, mean a lot of re-cabling. What you write makes me think: - should I rather build the whole server at once ... with hotswap bays ... without hotswap bays - or can I actually add drives whenever needed and should I then do it ... with hotswap bays ... without hotswap bays What's the best strategy?
