October 7, 20169 yr Hello all, first i'd like to thank you all for great! support. i built my Server about 6 years ago and when ever i have had any issues, this forum has been great. ok now to my problem, 3 weeks ago i had a drive that showed up with an red X. At the time we were getting ready to go on vacation so I told the family to leave the server off until i could get a replacement drive. we return from vacation and i had a business trip the following week. while on the trip, the family forgets not to use the server. I return from the trip to find server on. When i go to the GUI interface the screen is blank. After several attempts to click on the main and dashboard tabs i was able to access the main tab. Disk 6 has red X and their is a yellow/orange triangle on the lower part of the screen and in the upper tab that has Tower/Main. The GUI is running really slow. when in the dashboard tab there are 2 other drives that have a yellow triangle on the SMART status. the drive with the X has a green thumbs up where the others have a triangle. Do I unassign the bad drive and install new drive? What do i do about the 2 drived that have triangles on them? thanks in advance, oscar
October 7, 20169 yr Author ok i was able to get a syslog. GUI is very slow to respond. What would cause the GUI to be slow? tower-syslog-20161006-2047.zip

The Exclamation Point (orange triangle) means that one of the monitored SMART attributes has changed. The diagnostics will include that information

October 7, 20169 yr Disk 6 has 178 Reallocated Sectors, and 10 Pending. Definitely on its way out and should get replaced. Disk 5 looks like the Command Timeout attribute (188) increased, so the GUI flagged that. The disk itself is perfect otherwise, and could be just "one of those things". I'd just click on the exclamation point and acknowledge the warning, and it'll go back to a green thumbs up and will change back to an exclamation point if something changes again. Disk 9 got flagged because its reallocated sectors increased to 6 (but there's no current pending). I'm of the opinion that a few reallocated sectors are ok, but when they begin increasing, to ditch the drive (Others here however insist on perfection and will say that any reallocated sector means its time to replace the drive)
October 7, 20169 yr Author Disk 6 has 178 Reallocated Sectors, and 10 Pending. Definitely on its way out and should get replaced. so, am I able to replace drive 6 with drive 11? I have a new 4TB WD Red drive available, but I would rather just reassign a drive that is already in the array. Do i follow the procedure to shrink the array? Disk 5 looks like the Command Timeout attribute (188) increased, so the GUI flagged that. The disk itself is perfect otherwise, and could be just "one of those things". I'd just click on the exclamation point and acknowledge the warning, and it'll go back to a green thumbs up and will change back to an exclamation point if something changes again. ok Cool i will do that. Disk 9 got flagged because its reallocated sectors increased to 6 (but there's no current pending). I'm of the opinion that a few reallocated sectors are ok, but when they begin increasing, to ditch the drive (Others here however insist on perfection and will say that any reallocated sector means its time to replace the drive) drive 9 is an older drive I had added just because. it is empty, i think i will swap the 4TB drive after i replace drive 6 and get the array settled. thank you Squid
October 7, 20169 yr Author I am having trouble navigating the GUI. Going from main, to shares, to main seems to be hit and miss. what would cause this?
October 7, 20169 yr I am having trouble navigating the GUI. Going from main, to shares, to main seems to be hit and miss. what would cause this? I was having this problem on IE (or Edge or whatever it's called these days) and on Chrome. Clearing my cache and cookies helped on Chrome (and did bupkis for Edge) so try that for a start.

October 7, 20169 yr Author i am a little confused about what i need to do. can i stop the array. unassign disk 6 and 11, the reassign disk 11 to replace disk 6? or do i remove disk 6 and install a new drive in its place? which is faster? oscar
October 8, 20169 yr Author ok I replaced the bad drive and restarted the array. Array is rebuilding new drive. thanks for all your help Squid
