VM disk on cache noob question

Featured Replies

Hi, I just setup a test unRAID system and have been messing with the trial version and will be purchasing it soon. I have most things setup and running. Fairly easy. My question is that if I setup a Windows VM with the vDisk stored on the cache drive only with a single SSD Cache drive (no pool) then clearly that file will remain there and not get moved to array or parity. So basically if that cache drive crashes I lose my VM and have to start over? I would be store my saves/data on the array through network mount. Is that a correct assumption?

If I setup the vDisk to be on Cache as "Yes" instead of "Only" then does the VM have to be stopped to be moved over?

Thank you!

If you change the setting to "Yes" for the cache then when the vdisk gets moved to the data drives performance of the VM will plummet.

There is a plugin that attempts to resolve this issue by making a copy of the VM vdisk to the array disks on a predictable schedule.  Not tried it myself (yet) but that may resolve the issue.
