October 7, 20169 yr hi, i recently encountered a hard disk failure. i have my parity set up so i can still access my data and shares but im not going to be able to replace the faulty disk untill the end of the month "pay day". is there anyway to remove the disk from the pool so the data that should be on disk 4 is no longer emulated but is instead on a different disk so that i dont have to worry so much about another drive failing and loosing all my data.
October 7, 20169 yr Community Expert Short answer, no. You should post a diagnostic so we can see what is wrong. See Need Help link in my sig.

Are you sure that the disk has really failed? Often unRAID will disable a drive because a write failed that is caused by an external factor rather than the drive itself. If you post system diagnostics (Tools->Diagnostics) then you will get a more informed view as to whether this is the case.
October 7, 20169 yr Author im pretty sure yeah, the server fell from the cupboard it was in "about 2m". disconnected everything and checked the cables. plugged it back in, in my room and the drive was working perfect for about 40 minutes, then it stopped working and says the drive is "not installed". all the other 6 drives and parity drive is working perfectly. i have changed the cables and controller the drive is connected to, it shows up in the post as it initialises the drives but then during the boot up of unraid it comes up with an error. i cannot remember the whole error but it says about waiting 19s" tries this 3 times and then continues with the server boot up. i disconnected the drive and plugged it into my computer "windows 10", post seems slower, where it will hang for a couple of seconds before booting into windows. the drive is displayed in bios and shows up in windows as a 5tb drive but says the drive isnt initialised and wants me to initialise it to either MBR or GPT and then fails and says it couldnt be initialised. i have to go to work in 10 minutes so i shall reconnect the drive and post the diagnostics file tomorrow
October 7, 20169 yr im pretty sure yeah, the server fell from the cupboard it was in "about 2m". Are you saying your server fell 2 meters? As in, over 6 feet for the metrically impaired? If so, I wouldn't trust ANY of your hard drives. Hope you have good backups.
October 8, 20169 yr Author pretty much yeah, the other drives are working perfectly "surprisingly". how do i go about moving files from disk 4 to a different disk. do i use the Midnight Commander gui and putty and then just use the cp -r /mnt/disk4 /mnt/disk8 code?

October 8, 20169 yr Author okay, attached the drive. still get the error about dev ata4 waiting 19s please find the attached diagnostics file also tower-diagnostics-20161008-1401.zip
October 8, 20169 yr Community Expert You have 2 drives that need to be replaced. Post a screenshot of Main
October 8, 20169 yr Community Expert Disk2: Serial Number: W1V0VD7J 5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 096 096 036 Pre-fail Always - 3240 Disk3: Serial Number: 6VP09LSP 5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 002 002 036 Pre-fail Always FAILING_NOW 4015 I can't see disk4 in the diagnostics but I guess that would be 3 disks that need to be replaced. If you are extremely lucky, you may be able to rebuild disk4 from the other drives, then you could see about replacing the other 2. I would shutdown until you are able to try to rebuild disk4 unless you don't care about the data on any of those 3 disks. Do you have backups of any critical files? If there is anything irreplaceable (family photos, etc.) that you don't have backed up copy them to another computer and then shutdown. I wonder if some of these problems don't precede your accident. Do you have Notifications setup?
October 8, 20169 yr Author dont really have any backups but then i dont really have anything that i cannot download as most of my files are either media or steam games. The two other drives "2 and 3" where bought years ago with bad sectors and have worked for years no problems. i know that doesnt mean they wont fail and i do plan to replace all my drives with 5tb ones but they are fairly expensive. i believe disk 4 is the smart file named ST31000528AS_6VP09LSP-20161008-1401.txt and also has: 5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 002 002 036 Pre-fail Always FAILING_NOW 4015 looks like most of my drives need replacing lmao,
October 8, 20169 yr Author just going to run the drive through HDD Regenerator, ive used it before to repair bad sectors on drives 2 and 3 when i got them and it repaired the drives "or seemed to". going to see what happens. if it works then hey, if not then.. hey:D
October 8, 20169 yr Keep in mind that unraid isn't like normal OS usage when it comes to hard drive failures. unraid requires all other hard drives to be read perfectly from start to finish in order to successfully rebuild 1 failed drive. If multiple hard drives have random bad spots, it is unlikely that you will successfully be able to recover from a failure. If you really want to use marginal hard drives in unraid, you would probably be better served to forgo the parity drive and just use all your drives for data. Performance will be better, and you won't be lulled into a false sense of security by thinking you are protected from hard drive failure.

October 8, 20169 yr Author just to let you guys know, i ran half of the 5tb and no issues where shown during the HDD Repair thing. seen the comment about disk 3 above so ran it on that, got to 50% and no errors on that so i decided ot plug the drive in and give it another go. booted up to unraid and checked the main screen, it said disk 4 the 5tb one was now being seen by unraid but disk 3 was disconnected so i powered down the server and checked the wires and yup, the power cable had come loose from disk 3. connected it and powered on, disk 3 was seen but disk 4 was not "again....." realised that between the initial checks that i had done after the server fell i had added a cache drive. so i disconnected the cache drive and powered on the server..... all up and running fine and now doing a parity check / rebuild. it says it has 1 day left of the rebuild so fingers crossed.
October 8, 20169 yr Author still going to replace all the drives and still wanting to build a server 2.0 though
October 8, 20169 yr Community Expert all up and running fine and now doing a parity check / rebuild. What exactly do you mean by this? It's not possible to do a parity check and a rebuild at the same time. Which disk are you rebuilding? You should be rebuilding disk4.
October 8, 20169 yr Author it is rebuilding disk 4, thats the only one that says device contents emulated. at the bottom where it shows the progress of a parity check it says "Parity-Sync/Data-Rebuild in progress." Total size: 5 TB Elapsed time: 1 hour, 11 minutes Current position: 123 GB (2.5 %) Estimated speed: 30.1 MB/sec Estimated finish: 1 day, 21 hours, 4 minutes

A parity check is where unRAID checks the parity disk to make sure parity is in sync. If it finds any parity errors, it may correct the parity disk if it is a correcting parity check. A parity sync (or parity rebuild) is where unRAID writes the whole parity disk by calculating its data from all the data disks, without bothering to check what is already on the parity disk. A data disk rebuild is where unRAID writes the whole data disk by calculating its data from parity and all the other disks.
October 8, 20169 yr Community Expert V6.2 always shows parity sync/data rebuild in progress during a rebuild.
