Disk 4 failed, then parity, now not even web console

Featured Replies

It started with disk4 being unmountable.  Then i went to try and remove the drive and add another to replace it.  After reboot, the system is saying the parity drive is missing.  After another reboot the system wont come online at all.  No web page and the console spews a lot of faults i dont understand.  Can anyone help me out here?  As it stands now, i know my disk 4 is gone, i have no idea why parity was showing missing when it last gave me a web interface, and i have not a clue why it wont show the web.

Did you run any sort of a test on the replacement disk that you are using for disk4?

I am no expert on reading syslogs, but it looks to me that you had the start of your failure while the system was doing some disk operations.  I would suggest that you remove that new disk 4 and see what happens.

Looks like disk4 is crashing the system.  On the flash drive edit the file config/disks.cfg and set start array (can't remember the exact name) to be no.  The run the file system checks on disk 4 after rebooting

disk 4 is out completely now and it doesnt throw the errors.  I set the start array to no in the disks.cfg.  The web still fails to load, attached new syslog.

Why do you say this?  The vast majority of the time that a disk is flagged as unmountable it is due to a write not completing correctly leading to corruption at the file system level. The failed write can often be caused as a cabling or power issue.  If this is the case and the underlying disk is OK then it is easily fixable by running the relevant file system repair tool 9PROBABLY XFS-repair in this case0.

Syslog seems normal, you should be able to use the webGUI.

I re-cabled parity and new disk 4.  Web is back and new disk 4 appears to be throwing SMART errors.  Will try to move around to other ports tonight.  Thanks for the help thus far, i think its just a matter of returning this drive.
