Total UNRAID noob, 6.2 trial version, can't set up subdirectories in User Shares

Featured Replies

I've searched for a couple of hours to try to learn how to create subdirectories within the shares I'm setting up, but all I find is information about how to avoid having files get split, etc.  I'm talking more basic.  Hasn't anybody ever posted the simple answer to the question, "How do I make a subdirectory in the first place?"

Have you tried just doing it over the network?  (ie: Make a new folder)

Squid, thanks for your reply.  Other than being logged in to my UNRAID tower, exactly what do you mean by "over the network"?  Noob, remember.

Use your Windows/Mac navigate to the share, right click - make a new folder

I can do that, sort of.  The server allows me to see my shares on my Mac, but will not let me log in--keeps rejecting root login.

Same with Win 7 PC.  I can map shares as drives, then add folders, but only with those shares that are set up as public.  PC also keeps rejecting root login credentials.

Something odd here.

root only exists to manage from the terminal, you don't use root to log into shares.  Either create users on your Unraid box or just have guest permissions on your shares.

OK, I made a new user, and I can log in as that user via Mac, but I can't open folders or modify them.  They present in Finder as Sharepoint with no other properties.

The PC is trying to log in via a domain which is the PC's name.  Can that be right?

Is there some place I can get simple directions on how to make this work?

for security reasons you are never allowed to use 'root' as the username for accessing secured shares.

A bit of clarification on this.  As a security measure, the user root is specifically forbidden from be able logging onto a user share.

If you have  not changed (or set up) any restrictions on access ("Shares" >>> SMB Security Settings", "Security:"), anyone can add a new file or folder (directory) to the share without requiring a login from the unRAID end.  If you have not made any changes to this page on the unRAID GUI, you are probably running Windows and there have been some Window's configuration problems.  Post back with exact details about what you are seeing and what version of Windows you are running.

If you have change one of your User Shares to anything but 'Public", you will have to set up a User account on unRAID and give that User access to that User Share with permission to make changes.  You would then use thosee user credentials on the Windows end to be able to make changes (or even to gain access if you choose to go that far in securing the share).

Thanks to all who have chimed in to help.  I'm going to have to let this lie for now to get some other work done, but I'll be back.  Could be my home network, which I honestly have never intentionally and properly configured, is not going to cooperate with unRAID until it gets some deliberate attention.

This is clearly a good community, and I'm glad I joined.

OK, I'm finally getting time to revisit this.  I can no longer log in to my server due to the trial period having expired.  I actually expected to get some sort of email notification about that, but I didn't.  Anyway, I need to stop the array but cannot access the server at all.  Will it hurt just to hard shut down the server until I can get around to buying the application?

The trial only restricts starting the array, the web GUI and command line should still answer as normal. What exactly have you tried to access, and what does "no longer log in" mean exactly? I suspect you have some hardware or configuration issues that still need to be addressed, trial or not.

TL;DR Don't expect purchasing a license to solve not being able to access the server.
