So, what are the proper ways available to shutdown/restart Unraid 6.2?

Featured Replies

With the advent of 6.2 and 6.2.1 I've seen several posts about new shutdown methods of Unraid.  I'm a little confused about what all the different methods are at this point.  Could we get a quick list of all of the now proper ways for clean shutdown and restart?  I haven't found all of this information in the update announcements or posts.

I'd never used the "shutdown script" before and I believe that it has been rendered defunct with this update, correct?  Also, will the server do a clean shutdown by briefly pressing the power button?  Also, what is the best prompt command to type in?  Thanks in advance.

I'm interested in a definitive answer to so in an attempt to gather enough information to reply to this question I typed

shutdown --help

at the command line and, to my irritation, my server shut down! So that's certainly one way! I was rather hoping it would give me some information instead though  >:(

Hopefully someone who really knows the answer will chime in but I think the preferred ways include:

1. via the GUI - stop the array, and then power down

2. via the command line:

powerdown

(not sure about this one - it appears to be the official Linux command but

shutdown

certainly works, though probably deprecated - it's a bit confusing at the moment. I had the Powerdown plugin installed under unRAID 6.1.9 and the 6.2 betas and RCs but removed it before updating to unRAID 6.2 final)

3. briefly press the power button

4. press CTL+ALT+DEL on an attached keyboard (presumably this initiates a reboot, rather than a power down - I think this used to be caught by the Powerdown plugin so maybe it's now ignored)

5. via a UPS signalling its timeout (needs to be configured)

So if anyone else can add any information I'd be interested too. Now, to power up my server again!

Powerdown was the command when using the Powerdown plugin, which is no longer needed.

PowerOff is the official Linux command, which works fine now.

Not sure of all the other ways -- but I know it works fine with the UPS control code; the power button; and a PLink command line using ssh.  And of course the GUI works as well.    The plugin used to hook Ctrl-Alt-Del ... not sure if that's done now or not (easy enough to test it).

For 1. You stated: "via the GUI - stop the array, and then power down".

But, I am unclear about where the power down function is.  Is it still in the GUI?  Are you telling us to press the power button?  Please clarify... Because while I can only speak for myself, I am admittedly frustrated that the developers of this OS would allow setting up VMs, servers, and dockers to be easier than shutting down the freaking system.  Maybe it's just me, but I find it perplexing.

Anyone who can aid me in restarting, I would be greatly appreciative (I am a caveman, so pictures and and glyphs aiding the instructions would also be very welcome and helpful). .

Power Down and Reboot are at the bottom of the Main page of the GUI.
