Windows 10 vm virtual nic @ 10gbit ( more possible)?

Featured Replies

Hey there, is it possible to change the virtual nic which is 10 gbit for Windows 10 to something with more Speed? Like 40 gbit or 100 gbit? With my Limited knowledge of the xml stuff i could only figure Out the Mac adress setting.

I do move lots of stuff between vms on the same machine and might benefit from a faster Network Card.

you'll be hitting the read speed on your VM Disk and\or write speed inside the array well before maxing out the virtual NIC.

I dont think there's a way to change it to something "faster".

I am Not accessing the Array, but read/write to a Cache consisting of multiple SSDs. With 500+ mb per Drive 10gbit is used up very fast. And then there are m.2 Drives for others aswell.

I also got 10gbit usb3.1 Controllers on my vms each.

You could possibly try and add multiple Virtual NICs and then team them inside the OS?

You'll need to do exactly that, bare minimum, since 10Gbit is the maximum of any single link network interface currently in existence.

Or you could wait for Terabit Ethernet to be invented. 400 and 200 Gbit are under development, as of 2015, but no word on when they'll arrive, even in virtual form. And that Terabit will only be good for maybe two of your "500MB+" drives, assuming your hardware can sustain that much bandwidth at once.

I thought about teaming nics too, but i do Not know if and how this is possible with virtual nics, also it would Not do me any good if it would Not increase single Stream Transfer speeds. I do use Windows vms after all. I do use Link Aggregation from the switch to unraid.

I know there are 40 gbit and 100 gbit Standards and some odd ones in between in use today, i thought maybe One could Just Swap the virtual nic for One with 40 gbit speeds.

1 gbit is good for about 125 MBps

10 gbit is about 1250MBps

40 would be 5000MBps or about 5GBs. Which would be well enough for 10 SSDs which i do Not have.

Two Drives of 500MBps would be 1 GBps and so 8Gbps would be enough. 4 of the ssds would require a 16 GBps network which a 10gbit connection won't saturate.
