New SSD cache installed. No GUI

Featured Replies

My SSD Cache drive died so I followed all of the steps to replace a cache drive. When I started the server back up, the gui would not load. I could terminal to the server and it was running, but no drives were mounted. I shutdown, pulled the new drive and started back up. Everything works fine. I used a spare drive as the cache and it still works fine.

I have tried a few times, but every time the system will not start with the SSD installed. The drive is fine - I can see it on a PC in drive mgr.

Any advice?

What did you have on the old cache drive? Dockers? VMs? Try disabling them and then see if your server boots into the GUI.

What steps did you follow? Can you list them or point to the instructions you followed. Post your diagnostics zip.

No luck there. I can't even get as far as bringing up the array with the SSD installed.

From the LimeTech Wiki : https://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/Replace_A_Cache_Drive

Attaching the diagnostic file. Not sure if it will help since I had to remove the drive to bring up the system...

Those are very old instructions and haven't been fully updated for version 6 of unRAID, though they should work if your old cache disk was still functional. However you say that yours had failed so I don't understand what steps you took and what the current state of the replacement SSD is. Have you tried to restore it from some earlier backup?

Your syslog is full of entries like this:

Nov  2 16:23:45 Tower shfs/user: shfs_utimens: utimes: /mnt/cache/Backups/Photo Backup/Photos Library.photoslibrary/Database/BigBlobs.apdb (2) No such file or directory

so there are clearly files missing from your cache disk that are expected to be there.

But my array runs fine using a WD red as a cache disk. It only fails to start if I put in the SSD. Here is what happens:

1. Array runs fine.

2. Stop array and power down

3. Put new blank SSD in server

4. Gui will not start. No disks mounted

5. Power down and pull SSD

6. Power up and it goes back to running fine.

I have tried 2 different SSDs

Try getting the diagnostics after starting the array with the SSD,  since the GUI doesn't work SSH into the server and type diagnostics.

Looks like the ssd is crashing the marvell driver, can you try a onboard sata port?

Was on phone, so diags are hard to check in detail, I see now your board doesn't have any onboard SATA, and you're using a SAT2-MV8, I have one of those and it doesn't like some of my SSDs also, it crashes on boot like yours, so I believe your options are get a different SATA controller or try your luck with a different SSD.
