Plug an unRaid HDD in XP or ubuntu ? Or clean Upgrade from 4.2.4 to 4.5.1 ?

Featured Replies

Hello,

I tested unRaid free long time ago and decided to bought a pro license. I played a little with 4.2.4 but i had problems so i give it up.

This week i tried to start it again but I still have problem from WinXP or Ubuntu to access unRaid spares/folders.

So, to make it short and avoid to break my brain and yours during hours, I would like first to back up content of unRaid on a HDD running/formated with XP.

I plugged an unRaid PATA disk on the motherboard of the computer running WinXP and Ubuntu but I can't open it with XP, nor with ubuntu.

I made a "backup" (drag & drop) of the content of the unRaid USB key to perform a clean install of version 4.5.1. What will i have to keep from the old one to put in the new one ?

I do not have much in the server so I could erase it to start with a fresh one from zero, but I would like to be able to see/open unraid HDD on XP or Ubuntu.

Sorry for my bad english and thank you in advance for your help.

under ubunto you should be able to mount partition 1 of an unRAID formatted disk as a reiser file-system.

On windows XP. you would need to load a drive to be able to understand the file format of a reiserfs.  You can find details here: http://yareg.akucom.de/index.html#FEATURES

To be able to access the old disk in a new 4.5.1 version of unRAID, just format any flash drive with unRAID 4.5.1, you do not need any files from the old flash drive.  Boot the PC with the new flash drive, assign ONLY the old drive as a data drive 1 on the "devices" page.  Don't bother with adding a parity drive.  Go back to the main page and "Start" the unraid array.  If it says the disk is unformatted, do NOT format it.  Instead post a syslog by typing

http://tower/log/syslog'>http://tower/log/syslog

and saving the results in a file.  Then attach it to your next post.

If the disk shows as "green" on the management web-interface at http://tower in your internet-explorer it mounted just fine.  Then you can browse to \\tower\disk1 in windows-explorer and access to prior contents.

Thank you for your help,

Actually I have only one USB key that I could use to install and start up unRaid server, it is the one that I'm using for unRaid 4.2.4.

All I could say is that Tower is running and I could open the utility web page in my browser (http://192.168.1.101/main.htm). I can modify settings, etc, but http://tower/log/syslog return nothing, nor http://192.168.1.101/log/syslog

I have data (DVDs) only on one unRaid HDD, I can open it with yareg in winXP and copy from unRaid to XP but it is very, very slow.

In winXP, I see Tower in the "workgroup", the same as winXP but I can't open \\Tower\DVD that returns an error message, don't remember exactly what.

In ubuntu, I don't see Tower. I tried to find how to change the "workgroup" but it seems that it is not working like this. Normally I could see computers in other working groups.

All I remember is that I modified one of the file that was on unRaid 4.2.4 USB key because transfer rates were very slow and like "saw-toothed", logging in was very slow too.

I suppose that it is a network problem due to something I did wrong or maybe deactivated but have no clue.

I'm going to install unRaid 4.5.1 to try to have a syslog without formating any drive.

I'm really disappointed to not being able to do the basic to run the server.  :-\

That is why I said to load a different flash drive with 4.5.1.  Alternativeyl, you could download 4.5.1, unzip it on your PC, and then copy the bzroot and bzimage files to your old flash drive.  (You can even re-name the old files to bzroot.424 and bzimage.424 so you can rename them later if there is anything you wanted to see on the older release and wanted to revert to it.  Only those two files are needed to upgrade to 4.5.1.)

I understand, but you are copying over the LAN, and that is probably not making it go any faster.

Sounds good.  Start with a fresh flash drive so you do not change your old one.  All you need from it is your registration .key file (if you are using a registered version)

OK, I didn't unterstand it like this the first time. I thought I had to replace all the files (and folders (?)).

Nope, I plugged this hard drive directly to the motherboard that is running winXP. Very strange but as reiserfs is not native, maybe it takes more time to copy and verify datas

Well, remember that I only have one USB key that do the trick (compatible (?)). I made a backup of the content of this USB key just with a drag and drop so I hope that there is no hidden file(s) that will miss if I want to run unRaid 4.2.4 again.

The good news is that I just mounted //tower/dvd in ubuntu, I can see and open the files in this spared folder. As I have a new 1 To HDD formated under winXP I hope I will be able to mount this spared folder in winXP. The stange thing is that the server returned an error message when I logged in, but it shows up a few seconds later.

I tried http://www.tower.com/log/syslog again, but it stills return nothing even if I can open //tower/DVD.

What is the best thing to do at this point ?

Download 4.5.1, unzip it on my PC, and then copy the bzroot and bzimage files to my old flash drive ?

I tried http://www.tower.com/log/syslog again, but it stills return nothing even if I can open //tower/DVD.

The ability to get to the log file at //tower/log/syslog was added in the 4.5 series.  It is not possible on your older version.

That is what I suggest.  You only need those two files, the rest of the flash drive can stay as it is, and as I said, you can rename the old files to different names in case you want to revert back.

In winXP with IE7 both http://tower/log/syslog and http://192.168.1.101/log/syslog is working but ask a loggin and password.

In ubuntu with seamonkey http://tower/log/syslog returns nothing after 15-20seconds of searching, http://192.168.1.101/log/syslog returns a syslog without asking password.

Here is the one in winXP, if you need the one in ubuntu, let me know. Thank you for your patience. (I was afraid that new BZroot and BZimage could overwrite datas in other files that are on USB key)

You apparently do not understand.  That is a feature of unRAID 4.5.  You will not be able to get to the syslog via that method unless you boot unRAID 4.5.

Here is the one in winXP, if you need the one in ubuntu, let me know. Thank you for your patience. (I was afraid that new BZroot and BZimage could overwrite datas in other files that are on USB key)

The new bzroot and bzimage will NOT overwrite any of your configuration files on the flash drive.

The syslog shows these disks:

It looks like it is in the middle of a parity check.

I made the upgrade to unRaid 4.5.1 before writing this.

Well sorry for my awful english.

You are right: "Parity-Check in progress." but I didn't clic to start it, maybe accidentaly.

Well, it's time consuming so I will try a few things again before asking new question.

Thank you again.

It is probably not your native language... No problem.  Your English is fine

It started a check by itself since it detected you did not stop the array cleanly last time.  let it finish.
