November 7, 20169 yr I have a pretty small array (3tb parity with 2 data drives and a cache drive) and have run out of space. Nothing on the array is massively important. I was planning on replacing parity with a larger drive in a couple of weeks and moving the old parity drive to a data slot but as I've mentioned the drives are full and I'd like to create some space in the array now. I'm happy to run without parity for a couple of weeks until I can get a new drive so want to remove the parity drive and add it back as a data drive, I understand the risks of not having a parity drive, the extra space is more important to me than redundancy at the moment. What is the best way to go about this? I'm thinking I can just stop the array, unassign the parity drive, start the array back up, stop it again and assign the old parity to a data slot, will this work? Do I need to clear the old parity drive before adding it as a data drive?
November 7, 20169 yr Set a new config, assign all drives as data drives, leaving the parity slots empty. Hopefully only your old parity drive will show as unformatted, if another drive shows as unformatted, don't format it, download the diagnostics and post back here.
