Windows Network stopped showing unRaid server

Featured Replies

Came home this evening to transfer some files to my unRaid server and discovered it's no longer showing in Windows Explorer on my network.  Has been working fine for years without any issues as it's used almost everyday for file transfers and Plex.  I'm not sure what happened or how to fix this.  I can log into the unRaid server just fine via browser and it's playing Plex without issues.  I've tried rebooting the server, Rebooting all my other computers, etc. etc.  Still will not show.  All other PC's in our house show on the network also.  I'm using Windows 10, Any suggestions??

Did you reboot the Windows 10 computer?

I would also suggest that you set your unRAID server to allow it to become the Local Master.  "Settings"  >>  "SMB"  >> "Workgroup Settings".  (You may need to shutdown EVERY computer on the network EXCEPT for your unRAID server to allow it to become the Local Master.)

Install the Dynamix 'Local Master' plugin from here:

That plugin will show which computer on your network is the Local Master.

Problem most likely is with the Windows 10 machine.  Did you get an automatic update in the past couple of days?  And which favor (Home, Pro, etc.) of Windows 10 are you running?  (Windows 10 has been giving a lot of folks some trouble so you are not the only one who has had an issue!)

Thanks for the suggestions.  Yes, I have rebooted the Win 10 machine many times.  There appears to have been no updates within the last few days upon checking the log, So that can't be it.

I actually already had that plug-in installed and the little yoda guy shows my unraid server as the local master.

Running Windows 10 Home 64 bit.

Still not showing.  I was able to figure out how to map the unraid drives to be able to transfer files too still.  However, I would call this not a fix but a bandaid as it makes no sense why I can't access my machine any longer.

One thing to try is to change all of the Workgroup names so that they are all capital letters-- i.e., 'HOMEGROUP' on all of the computers.  The reason is that Windows ignores all capitalization of names of files and folders and in the olden days actually displayed them in caps.  I assume it does the same with the Workgroup name.  Linux, on the other hand, honors case differences.  Thus, two files named 'Example' and 'example' are two different files in Linux while Windows will determine that they are the same file.    What I have never been able to determine is how SMB handles this confusion.  Using all caps will keep Windows happy while Linux could care less...

What I do know is that there has been a recent case where unRAID had two shares one called 'Media' and the 'media' on the server side and a Windows computer on network side had real issues dealing with this issue.  (One share had files in it and the other didn't and the poor user was wondering where his files had disappeared to!)
