New Upgrade Thoughts

Featured Replies

Hi there I just ordered the following to upgrade my unraid server from the specs listed below. Please let me know what you think/opinions. Thanks

CPU: Intel Xeon 2683 v3 Retail Not ES

MB: SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SRA-F-O ATX Server Motherboard LGA 2011-3 Intel C612

Mem: Crucial 32GB Kit (8GBx4) DDR4 ECC Registered DIMM 288-Pin Server Memory

Cooler: Noctua NH-U14S

GPU: MSI GeForce GT 710

That's a VERY nice upgrade, although I would have done it somewhat differently.

With such a superb high-end Xeon, I would have used a server-grade motherboard with registered (buffered) memory.

But what you ordered will still be a very nice system.

You're missing the whole point of X99 - quad channel memory.  You need another 2 DIMMs to get that working.

With only two DIMMs you may as well just have got an i7 on Z170, plus you'd have onboard video and a lot less power consumption at idle (X99 platform uses close to 80W idle, Z170 uses down as low as 20W).

Although I agree that populating the memory modules so you'll get quad channel operation helps maximize the performance, I don't agree that you "may as well just have got an i7 on Z170" => you'll still have the benefit of 14 real cores and a PassMark of 17893 with your CPU; and other more subtle benefits of the E5 series.

Assuming you've already purchased this, a couple extra memory modules would be a reasonable future upgrade.  If you haven't yet bought it all, I'd still recommend switching to a server-class motherboard like the SuperMicro X10SRA-O or an equivalent AsRock board.  You'll still have quad-channel support, but you'll have buffered RAM.

SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SRA-F-O Because I wanted ipmi.

Excellent choice.  With that board, registered RAM, and that amazing CPU you'll have a REALLY nice system  :)
