February 17, 201016 yr Hey everybody, this is my first post. I'm interested in unRAID, but money is tight. I found that on eBay I can get a used rackmount server with a very fast CPU and enough memory for less than $50; all I would need is some new HDDs and a flash drive. Problem is, all of these servers seem to handle only SCSI drives, not SATA drives. Is it possible and recommended to build an unRAID from a server like this? Where might I find ones that support SATA? Thanks!
February 17, 201016 yr See if you can get a peek at the inside where the bay's are. Chances are you may be able to remove the backplane and plug the sata drives directly in with wires. I have a supermicro server like that. No back plane, just the removable slide out racks.
February 17, 201016 yr The ad mentioned the drive trays were NOT included, so you might have to fashion some mounts of your own. You will not want to run scsi drives... way too small, and way too expensive. You'll want to add in some SATA controllers.
February 19, 201016 yr This hardware consumes a lot of power and produces a lot of noise. Not worth it...
