very poor vnc performance

Featured Replies

I have noticed bad vnc performance in my VMS with this latest rc3 . There is a lot of lag which gets worse the longer connected to the VM.

If i close the vnc web window and then reconnect it is better again then gets worse over a similar time period.

I am not sure if it is connected at all but i had a windows 10 VM using passthrough I removed the GPU as passthrough and went back to qxl for graphics.

I couldn't get beyond 800 x 600 for the resolution. So I removed the Nvidia drivers in case this was causing the issue but the problem remained.

The driver being used was the standard windows basic VGA driver which had always been fine with vnc graphics.

Anyhow I then installed the  qxlwddm driver from here http://people.redhat.com/~vrozenfe/qxlwddm/ and I had back the resolution. I have never had to install a driver for qxl before.

Has anyone else had either of these issues?

I installed RC4 on another flash drive to test latest kvm and also noticed really poor VNC performance. Never had any issues on 6.2.x

Are these VNC issues specifically when using the noVNC capability to connect (through the unRAID webGui)?  If you guys use a local VNC client, do the issues persist?

The QXL driver that was included in 6.2 doesn't require you to load a driver for Windows, but if you do load the QXL driver, it will allow you to specify a higher resolution and in theory provide better overall performance.

Hi, jonp. Yes, it only is when using noVNC. Using virt manager's vnc client, I don't get the same problem. I haven't tried any other vnc clients.

Ok, there are a large number of patches for noVNC that we want to apply, but that won't make the cutoff for 6.3.  For now, the workaround is to either A) deal with the poor performance of noVNC or B) use another VNC client to connect.

Thats good there some patches.

Jon I love the way A) is a "workaround" lol  ;)

Another alternative is to use virt-manager to configure it to use Spice instead of VNC, but then you'll definitely need to use virt-manager, or any other Spice client, to connect to it.

Hey guys

I am now on the 6.3.3 and I am having these VNC problems

it slows down after a few minutes of use.

any thoughts on the matter ?  if we are to use any other VNC client, why then we have noVNC in the unraid distribution?

Because no additional software is required on the client.  Any other VNC client will work better than noVNC (after the initial setup / install), and if using Windows on a VM, then you want to use RDP for best results.

FYI, the noVNC performance issues are resolved in version 6.4 (not yet released).

Oooh..... If the performance of that is better I can really play around with more distros.....

Any time frame? (I know the answer is soonTM but you have to try)..

I will emphasis that I find noVNC on 6.3 totally unusable.....

Woot! I would think that this is about as good of a guarantee we are going to get for a definite release date of before next year at this time ;)
