Drives Passed through SAS Controller Can't Be Assigned

Featured Replies

Hello,

I am still pretty fresh to unRAID, so please forgive me. I was given an old server with a LSI SAS1068E BIOS 6.06.06 running FW 1.10.00.00-IR with 4x WD 1TB Black drives connected . I'm not very familiar with controllers but I have the boot order disabled in it's firmware which from my understanding should allow passthrough to unRAID. When looking in unRAID I do see the 4 drives in the Dashboard however they are gray boxes and don't have any smart statuses or temps. This is how they appear (sdh, sdi, sdj, sdk are the SAS drives):

When trying to assign those drives to the array I can select the drive but then the page just refreshes and the slot goes back to unassigned. My guess is I really need to update the firmware / BIOS for this card but I'd need some help with that.

Any suggestions on my next steps?

Thanks

Looks like that helped in getting me to assign the drives! However I still don't see the SMART status on those drives. Is that typical?

Yes.  RAID controllers have always been problematic, as their development priority was always the RAID side, not the needs of JBOD disks, and IT mode.  But over time, that has been improving, with both added support in the firmware, and workarounds discovered by users.  Give it time, and it's likely that SMART info will be fully supported.

Someone here may already know how to get SMART info from drives on that card, if it's possible.
