[SOLVED] unRaid on ASUS Z10PE-16 WS

Featured Replies

I have been trying to get unraid 6.2.4 running on my ASUS Z10PE-16 WS motherboard with dual E5-2667 V3 CPUs and 32GB ECC Registered DDR4 2133Mhz RAM

It displays a black screen with a flashing cursor at the top left of the screen before it gets to the Login and hangs

the USB stick worked on my laptop to get into unraid

I have tried

a single RX480

a single 7970

a single GT210

both RX480 and 7970

both RX480 and GT210

Thinking its because I don't have onboard graphics but thinking less after trying all the combinations

Reset BIOS to default settings

tried USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 (apparently USB 3.0 can be an issue on some motherboards)

Unplugged my Adaptec 71685 RAID card (running in HBA mode) didn't change anything

Tried two different USB sticks

Any help would be appreciated

Thankyou

You don't need onboard graphics.  But, if you want to use a monitor to track what is happening, you will have to check your BIOS to determine if any action is required on your part to enable a video card.  I have never used a dual CPU board but I would think you have to perform some action to assign a video card to one of the CPU's.

Are you getting the unRAID boot menu?

Does indicate that is unpacking bzroot and bzimage?

Have you tried to run memtst?  (It is one of the boot options?  Memtst needs to run about 24 hours to thoroughly test your memory.)

Well I have the ASUS Z10PE-8 WS, and like your mobo, it HAS onboard graphics!

On the motherboard there is a header that allows you to connect the included VGA bracket.

Not sure if this is your problem, but in my own case, I was having the exact same problem.

It turned out that the POST, and unRAID boot screen, was actually displaying on the onboard VGA port!

BTW, I had set in the BIOS and on the motherboard jumper to "DISABLE" onboard VGA. It made NO difference.

I now, run a VGA cable to the secondary vga port of my monitor, so that when required, I can actually see the boot process.

Thankyou heaps for your reply, It turns out i figured it out myself  and came back to let people know, but you were correct

I forgot the ASUS Z10PE-16 WS (and probably ASUS Z10PE-8 WS, but not sure) comes with an on-board VGA adapter that goes to a motherboard header. So I installed that then went to BIOS and found the option to make the computer use on-board VGA as the main graphics

In BIOS It's in IntelRCSetup > Miscellaneous Configuration > Active Video > Onboard Device

Choose Onboard Device

Change the USB thumb drive with unRAID on it to the primary boot device

Save and reboot with your graphics cable plugged into the on-board graphics VGA plug

Boot into unRAID GUI (a screen comes up giving you 5 seconds to choose, default is headless (no GUI)) and setup

Hopefully this helps someone trying to do the same thing
