Install unRAID on an iMac?

Featured Replies

Is it possible to install unRAID on an iMac?

I dont mean run an OSX VM.

I mean actually use the iMac to unRAID.

Best/Worst case Fire up a USB and give it a boot and see how it responds. ;)

A lot of your modern Macs have intel boards anyways so I don't see why it couldn't honestly.

I don't think you'll get it to boot - but it's worth a try, I suppose.

It is possible to boot almost every bootable USB with UEFI bootloader on Macs. I installed ESXi on my iMac and Linux on my MacBook, i just had to make the bootable usb stick with rufus and select it by holding down the option key while booting.

That's good to hear. Others have tried to use old Mac Pros for unRAID (at least they have drive bays!) and reported not being able to get them to boot. I haven't tried it myself as, frankly, I can't see the point.

Needs to be Intel not power pc

All Mac Pros are Intel. The similarly looking Power PC based ones were called Power Macs.

well he/she said iMac not mac pro, either way hope you try it and it works

Ok, but it wasn't clear which post you were referring to. I took it as a response to my post where I said some people had reported Mac Pros not booting unRAID.

I've seen a lot of people selling Macs listed as Mac Pros when they are really Power PCs, G5s..

I guess they look alike.. on the outside. If an iMac will work, I don't see why a Real Mac Pro won't.

I don't know if the old Mac Pros will work but the "trash can" Mac Pro (2013) should work, it is officially supported by ESXi(Source) but i don't know if unRAID works.

It's easy to tell the difference, even from a distance: count the optical drive slots.
