Unraid showed missing disc (pic inside) what do I do?

Featured Replies

Run parity monthly on 1st (21 days ago and no errors). I did a clean power down and checked all wires (6 months/year ago unraid didn't want to show parity, checked wires and fixed problem) and thought that might be the issue.

It didn't fix the problem (pic attached) and before I do anything stupid I want to ask how to proceed. The "unassigned Devices" were it has "Sdg WDC_WD20EARXxxxxx" was in the disc 3 spot previously. I didn't kick the PC box, touch any wires, update any software, anything. The only thing that my unraid box does is 1 month parity and watching movies/tv shows, etc...

I believe I can just "STOP ARRAY" and then assign SDG WDC_20EARX to disc 3 (since that was where it was previously) and there isn't a problem? Please instruct me of what to do so I don't make it harder for you guys to fix a bigger problem later.

Thank you

Post your diagnostics.

Server was rebooted after the disk failed so we can't see what happened, but SMART for that disk looks fine so you can try and rebuild to the same disk.

when you mean "rebuild" what does that mean?

1) stop array

2) assign Sdg WDC_WD20EARXxxxxx to "disc 3 spot"? (only because that is what it was assigned to before this problem)

3) ahhh...parity will either check it and it is fine or "rebuild it"????

4) after xyz steps....ahhhh...run parity check?

Please elaborate further...I am total noob.

Thank you for assistance

-stop array

-assign the disk

-start array to begin rebuild

When it finishes you can do a parity check to verify all is well.

Something is up...This is what I found today.

This time I DIDN'T touch anything and just got a screen shot and zip file like requested from a few weeks ago.

1) What is going on?

2) How to fix? (if drive is dead or dying I don't have problem with getting new one and rebuilding)

Thank you for all the wonderful help to all my tech experts!

Post a Dropbox or similar link.

Disk3 dropped offline, if you haven't yet you can replace that disk cables and try again, if it still fails you'll need to replace the disk.

  • Author

Understood...check/replace cables.

Will report back again if problem persists. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Replaced SATA cable...in process of rebuilding array. Will check result tomorrow but new HD is on the way assuming this drive is starting to fail.

Another question. I have Unraid 6.1.6. I did read posts about new releases 6.2 and 6.2.4. I wasn't able to use "check for updates" feature. So according to what I read I need to download 6.2.4 (or do I need to install 6.2 first?) and setup my USB with 6.2.4. then start array? I recall that from version 4.xxx to 5 or 6 you had to update them in specific order. Does that not apply if I have version 6.1.6?

Main reason is I saw this video (http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=54578.0) and it was super easy to "preclear" new hard drives. He was using 6.3.0-rc4...does 6.2.4 have this easy preclear feature?

Thank you for all assistance
